    I never heard Mustang Sally until I was in college. The radio around Mad-town had some astounding gaps. Some amazing, stuff, too.

    When my kids asked me to go over school reports and essays, I'd take out a red marker and do a first pass striking those words and phrases that amount to throat clearing:
    * rather
    * quite
    * very
    * some what
    * a lot
    * in my opinion/I think that

    It's like the woman that spit in the creek while her husband was drowning.
    Every little bit helps.

    You still have blueberries?

    That's cool. Mine gave up by the end of the second week of July.

    But talk about "little bits" of food. So small, some of them. I made up a salad with commercial red seedless grapes and the grapes looked like whole watermelons in comparison to the petit pois blueberries.

    My Dad still has some miniscule twist bits like these. So tiny.

    About a decade ago, I suggested in jest that he hide them, so I wouldn't be tempted to try to use them. But he did hide them, anyway. And now he doesn't remember where he secreted them - and we can't find them.

    When a child had done something they should not have, and Dad finds out and the Interrogation is beginning, the child buys time by answering 'sort of" until they can make a commitment to try to stonewall, lie all the way, come entirely clean, or maybe just buy time until Dad's temperature comes back down.

    And yet, I encourage people who must appear in public and speak, to use words such as these to fill the voids that otherwise get filled by "uhhh" or sometimes that smell of abject panic. I recall some speaking experts who taught Gen/Pres Eisenhower to say "And I say that" rather than "Umm".

    And.

    The main thing that's wrong with in my opinion/I think that is, when people inject it where opinion and belief is irrelevant.

    Yes, a written essay is different from public speaking.

    As for "in my opinion/I think that", it was in an essay that was entirely the writer's opinions, so it was otiose. In writing, words should tell, otherwise, leave them out.

    the national writing project would take you aside and provide a terse, polite rebuke about the use of your red pen. The research on the negative effect of the red pen has been in for 35 years.
