Even if you are managers with decades of experience don't lie about what you, IT and a vendor did or did not do when all the tools for security, compliance and auditing can and if asked, will show the c suite every move, message or call that you make.

Me thinks perhaps there is a story here and not just a general word to the wise!

you had me at 'don't lie'

best strategy ever. You can keep your mouth shut, or you can tell the truth.

That's kind of a sad short story right there. I imagine a cardboard box full of personal items was at the end of it.

In the insurance industry that's charitably referred to as misstatement

Since he's talking about managers-they probably found scapegoats.

Well, I guess SOMEONE probably ended up with a boxful, then, but you're right, it may well have been the wrong someone.

Having been involved in small business and being self employed for 30 years , the opening statement to this thread makes absolutely no sense to me . May have been in Swahili or some other language that I have never been exposed to . I count my blessings .

At some point many companies took control away from managers and gave it to accountants. I appreciate profit, productivity and finances. Goal #1 is to make money. For many years my employer trusted me to run my business as if it were my own. And we were profitable and effective as a business. Once consultants and accountants started taking control we lost control of our purchasing and it affected service agreements and everything we did. From snow removal to toilet paper we had to switch to cheaper alternatives. It became harder to get things done when reliable vendors were replaced and you were forced to get things done with cheaper alternatives. You can pay people living wages. You need to give people a stake in what they are doing and they will move the world for you. This is what is wrong with today’s business model. I’m pretty happy to be retired at this point.

I always took the route of - whatever I put it in a work email, I would also feel comfortable publishing on the front page of my local newspaper.

Yes! Even if you assume an email (or message, or conversation) is secure, anything can be "forwarded".

Change is hard on some people. At times it gets forced and not from traditional ways. At times the cliques or cabals in an organization get known and shaken up.
