I watched Monterey Pop last night. It had been a long time since I had seen it.

One thing that I didn't remember was how frustrating it is that there are pretty much no full songs in the movie. Everything is little snippets.

I guess it's an interesting documentation of the start of the Summer of Love, with lots of hippies walking around, but musically, because of the absence of full songs, it leaves a lot to be desired. Musically, the Concert for Bangla Desh is far superior.

It's been a long time for me too. I don't recall the editing. I know there have been things added to it over the years. I saw a great Bloomfield performance from that, which wasn't in the original. I also spotted an old lover in the crowd who I haven't seen in 40 years!

I have the 3 dvd set all full songs in that version.

Disc 1 is the whole Monterey Pop movie as shown in the theaters

Disc 2 is Jimi and Otis Redding full uncut whole performances with songs that werent on disc 1.

Disc 3 is all the performances that werent shown like Buffalo Springfield The Association and many others.

I too recently watched it again. Two times. the 2nd time with Pennebakers commentary running through it. I 'think' he said that it was originally intended to be released first on network television. Can one of you tell me if this is true(?). That would definitely explain why any swear words were edited out and may explain the cuts.
*The Dead (ironically) refused to filmed or recorded because they thought it would be too commercial.

I'm talking about the movie as originally released. I watched it on Comcast On Demand.

This is one of the of the things that bugs me about a lot of performance footage from that period. Some performances are edited very badly. The worst is when the cameraman tries to get trippy and zooms in an out rapidly. Wow, man. Oh well. It's still cool that we have this stuff to watch in any form.

My gripe with Monterey Pop is that I couldn't get a ride. I could have easily scored tickets, but no one I knew was going, or at least, so I thought until a couple of girls in my class I saw at the Mall were talking about being there.

Yes, that's what I've heard but someone was filming the dead at least some of their set because there is a "viola lee blues" video supposedly from that show on youtube.

Mark, is there any grateful dead footage on the 3 disk version?
