Ok, so to start with, this won't be a gold top.

Some of you know I play in a parody band that's fronted and was started by some friends who are professors at the vet school at Oklahoma State. For about 11 or 12 years now they've been writing songs that fit the curriculum they teach, and we have a rock show for the students at the end of the year. Well, one of the founding members is retiring at the end of the year, so this will be our last show with him.

This guy has been a really good friend and has taken me to see some really great concerts (Eric Clapton when Derek Trucks was touring with him, and he also took me to see Tom Petty at one of his last concerts before passing), so I wanted to do something special for him. It used to be customary for a company to give a gold watch to someone who was retiring after having been there for a long time, but since this is rock-n-roll, I figured it had to be the rock equivalent, so I'm building him a custom guitar.

    Here's what I'm going with:

    - ribbon sapele body with a flamed maple top
    - 3 piece neck (flamed maple and mahogany)
    - Richlite fretboard
    - rear routed
    - PAF neck and noiseless tele bridge
    - gold knobs
    - LP style toggle switch
    - amber burst finish

Our next concert is May 10th, and I'm going to try to have it done by then, but if I don't make it, the university is having a big retirement bash in July, so I've got a backup date.

Very cool thing to do Roger. Nothing better than a build with a deadline. ( no offense intended Jupiter :) )

A fitting gift of appreciation for a good friend.

When I "retired" all I got was a plea to stay on, but for less than union scale, of course - heh, heh, heh, :).

Where do you source the Richlite, Roger?

    Best Regards,
    Geo.

You’re one of the coolest guitar builders around. When you have time we are all patiently waiting for some more pics of your project;)

I ordered a 1/4" thick cutting board from a place called the Cutting Board Company. Check out the link below where I do that math to figure the best cost/fretboard yield :)

Thanks, man. I did get the maple cut and processed down to the right thickness for the top, but I didn't get any pics of it. Not sure how much more work I'll be getting done before the weekend, but I'll be sure to post up pics if I do.

I'm still trying to decide if I want to do an offset or standard Tele body. I want to be sure this is a lightweight guitar for him, and the offset is slightly smaller. I'm also going to chamber and have decided to do a tummy cut as well.

Nice. The blanks look great. You're a good friend, your buddy's lucky. Anxious to see pics of build progress. (All I got when I retired was a plate of cold sausage and peppers, chicken parm and a pat on the back.)

Nice looking wood, a great sounding concept, and very generous gesture. Can’t wait to see this one unfold.
