this sucks. I'd rather be getting together with Pat and the rest of the guys at the old Country Corners next weekend, playing "Watermelon Crawl" or something stupid like that

I'm starting to hate all of these songs.

    No offense.

My younger brother asked me to sing this song for him when he was in hospice care.

When my friend Stephen Bruton died, I sang this at a memorial service for him. He was a Warren Zevon fan. Me too.

Fly like an Eagle by John Denver

I know it is very corny, but it played during the last episode of "Magnum PI" where Magnum dies. I loved that show and that song haunts me ever since...keep associating it with the death of a hero. I know, corny, but it does.

but i don't remember magnum dying.

Well, he did at the end of season 7 which was supposed to be the last episode, but it left a lot of things unresolved so they came back for an 8th season. At the end of the 8th, they did the William Shakespere thing and made it a happy ending where everyone ends up getting what they wanted. Magnum returns to the USN with his daughter, Rick gets married and out of prison, etc. The original ending was better.

I’ve had to do music at too many funerals. Besides the songs already mentioned, I’ve also done these....

At my mother in law’s funeral.

    At my brother David’s funeral.

    At my friend David’s funeral.

At my grand daughter’s funeral, an original song I wrote.

    At my brother Bob’s funeral.

    Sorry about your friend.

I suggest, "Let It Be." It has traditionally been a funeral song in my family, and trust me, it's a real tear jerker.

I only did one funeral. Amazing Grace, Seeds & Plant Your Fields were what we came up with overnight for an “old time country music lover”. We were strangely enough hired for it and didn’t know the old fellow at all.

There are many love songs that could possibly fit, like “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love With You)” depending upon the whole thing. It’s a tough call but many songs are ‘right’, and maybe the family will have some theme or other input? That’s what I first look for.

In any case I’m sorry for your loss.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. As I get older friends passing on happens more often and it is always sad. I like all these choices but think if your old band actually played Watermelon Crawl you might include it.

Sad to hear of your buddy's passing BT. The 2 tunes that came to mind have been suggested - I'll Fly Away and Amazing Grace. Can't go wrong with either IMB. And should the band be playing the wake, to celebrate his life - either Call Me the Breeze and/or Quarter to Three.

My standard funeral selection is Grateful Dead's "Ripple", and often do it on the mandolin.

Going Home - just music , composed by Mark Knopfler. No words, what words are fitting? Just lovely , quiet music.
I plan to have my ashes thrown into the sea at sunset on a full moon ( tide) at a place called Tanah Lot,Bali, a temple on the sea at dusk with that playing softly, not to disturb the locals.
