A Duncan pickup that sounds like the Tone Zone

My favorite bridge pickup is the DiMarzio Tone Zone. I put in a Duncan Sh11 (Custom Custom) into the bridge of an LP to go with an Alnico II Pro in the neck. Love the Alnico II Pro, but the Sh11 is just ok. Should have just gone with the tried and True Tone Zone - better clean and distorted tone. I’d like to take advantage of the Duncan exchange program, but don’t know which pickup to get. Does Duncan make something similar to the Tone Zone? Thanks!

I wouldn't limit myself to one maker... so many choices out there ...

The only reason I’m asking about Duncan pickups is to take advantage of their exchange program.

The Tone Zone is my favorite high output HB in a Strat bridge, because is stays so articulate compared to other high output HBs that can get muddy. I’ve also found this to be true of the SD JB, which I have in the bridge of another strat right now. It’s hard to compare them directly - I can’t say they sound the exactly same, because pickups sound different in different guitars, I find, but they have some of the same qualities that i like. The JB is probably my go to full size high output bridge HB from SD.

Hmm, I remember trying it a while back and not loving it. Going from memory, but I thought it sounded kind of guttural when playing chords with heavy gain. Maybe worth another look. Thanks for the suggestion!

I have no idea to be honest... but do you think a Slash might be in the ballpark of what you are after? It's Alnico II like the custom custom but with more bass and less mids, at 8.9 DCR it might be a good fit with the APII in the neck.

Yep, Alnico II Pro makes for a great bridge pickup, too. I just need something with a bit more output for this guitar. Thanks though!

Remember, swapping magnets in the CC will get you a few other pickups: ceramic makes it a Custom, A5 makes it a Custom 5, A8 makes it a Custom 8.

Well, like I said, I can’t say they sound the same, I just find them in the same ballpark output-wise and I like the articulation of both, but YMMV for sure!

Yep - should stick with what you know and love, but I would shoot SD an email for sure, they can probably steer you to the closest product they have to a Tone Zone reallyvquickly.

Check out Alt8. It has big low end and useable clean despite being hotter than CC. And it pairs well with A2P in the neck. Of course it's still not gonna sound like a Tone Zone.

Well, I spoke to the SD techs, and they strongly recommended that I exchange the Sh11 for the Slash signature version of the Alnico II Pro. Allegedly it’s got more mids and lows and is hotter than the standard version. So, I’m going with that. We’ll see how it turns out. If it doesn’t fit the bill, I’ll just go with Spudcaster’s recommendation and get a trusty Tone Zone. If nothing else, the Slash pickup should be easy to sell on Reverb.
