I'm sure it's not an MA, but if you read it says, a post graduate course. It's simply worth the same as other classes, I highly doubt a degree is feasible in the Beatles, but it could be categorized in a larger music degree.

I think the work of the Beatles is as worthy of study as any one else in the history of music. And I strongly suspect that more than one Master's thesis has been written on the subject of the Beatles, and might focus on the music and/or the cultural impact. Of course, as Mr Reed points out, the degree would not be an MA in Beatles.

Wonder what kind of job you could get with that? Too bad being the annoyingly accurate Beatles facts guy doesn't pay too well...

Hmm. Not sure that it says what you think.

This is a copy and paste from the article:

"A university in Liverpool has launched a Master of Arts degree in The Beatles, the city's most famous sons, and called the qualification the first of its kind."

and

"This MA is expected to attract a great deal of attention, not just locally but nationally and we have already had enquiries from abroad, particularly the United States."

. . . I don't think that denies the course being an MA, and in the UK and (I thought) US surely an MA/MSc is almost always post-grad?

I don't see why it would be a problem, a Master's degree should be evidence of a study of a narrowing field of research on a subject in which the student already has wide competence, so doing an MA in "The Beatles" following a BA in (say) British History, or Music, or even Social Studies would be not unreasonable, surely? That's how MAs work, and most MA enrollees need evidence of quality of study in the form of an Honours , usually a First or possibly a 2.1. The majority of full time Master's Degrees in the UK are 12 month courses.

Thats what i figured too, but what am i going to be doing in my 4 x 12 (ironic?) modules ?

Has anything ever happened in Liverpool since The Beatles ?, yes, i love 'em too but it's getting a bit much now isn't it ?, especially as they all couldn't wait to leave the place and head south !!

What next ?, BA in Diddymen ?, Tarby's golf uni ?

Lennon would be laughing his ass off.

Yes this is true--while the study of pop music is important to the psychology, anthropology, sociology of the culture of the 20th century, I don't think I have seen a degree specializing in Hemingway, or Picasso, or Samuel Beckett.

I'd prefer "Two degrees in Be bop/ A PHd in swing/ A master of rhythm"...and I'd be a rock N roll king.

Thanks Lowell.

If you really want to do a self-guided, semi-academic study of the Beatles, check out "The Beatles as Musicians". It's published in two volumes: "Quarry Men through Rubber Soul" and "Revolver through Anthology". Covers influences, songwriting, theory, recording -- even touring. Fascinating stuff, although thorough analysis of any pop music can get dry at times.

I think it's great and if I had the time and money I would enroll in the course. I'd also like to get a PHD in Led Zeppelinology.
