Currently up in Ann Arbor in the mitten state, attending my stepdaughter's college graduation. Yep, she's a wolverine. And I prefer the term "bonus daughter", which I learned here on TDPRI, from our excellent colleague Blazer. Apologies for the length of this post. It's a big milestone. The third of my bairns to have launched via university. There were two ceremonies; in one year, the Ann Arbor campus confers something like 7,000 undergrad degrees and close to 4,000 assorted post-grad degrees. One ceremony was just for her School of Music, Theater and Dance. She graduated with a degree in Theater- Performing Actor. This ceremony was the version where they all walked the stage, had a commencement address, and other pomp & circumstance. Some very talented graduating students provided entertainment for the ceremony. The main speech for this ceremony was by two U of Mich. graduates - the songwriting team of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, recent Oscar winners for their song "City of Stars" in the movie La La Land. Along with a medley of that tune and others, they presented a song written just for this occasion and performed with the help of music theater grads and what may have been members of a school jazz ensemble. The electric guitar player wielding a telecaster! If I read the scrolling credits correctly, the young tele player was Mr. Alex Anest. Job well done. The second ceremony was at the Big House, where the degrees were officially conferred "en masse", by School (19 in all), and 39 ROTC students were all commissioned in to their respective branch of the military. Apparently, there was a bit of a kerfuffle on campus, as the larger Big House ceremony didn't have a big name commencement address (in past years, US Presidents, Senators and such have done the honors) - this year, they just had a "sizzle reel" of years past, as this was the bicentennial year for U of M. 200 years. I wasn't upset. As part of the ceremony, they had Pasek & Paul reprise the performance from the previous day. Telecaster on the jumbo-tron at the Big House!
