I have two snippets of memory from a movie I saw in the 1980s. It was mostly about a bunch of teenagers or young adults who were into hot rods, and the cars were somewhat central to the plot. The snippets are:

One scene early in the movie where a surfer-type guy with a black mullet is driving either an EL Camino or a Ranchero. Someone on the cruise strip does something he dislikes, and he hits a button or switch to illuminate a neon sign in the back window of a hand flipping off the person behind them.

Another scene later in the movie (building up to the climax) where the above guy is riding with his friend (who is the protagonist in the movie). I feel like the car is a late-60s Camaro or Firechicken. The protagonist "flips on his supercharger" with a toggle switch for more power (as if that's how it worked). The surfer-type guy says something to the effect of "Wow man, I always thought your car had more meat under the hood than this".

Vague memories of these two scenes have been rolling around in the back of my head for the last few days, and it's driving me bonkers. I saw the movie on rented VHS around 1987 (as a 12-year old), and I'm pretty sure it's not The Wraith.

As far as 80s B-flicks go, does anyone remember anything like this?

It wasn't a comedy. I feel like there was some supernatural element to the film but that could be conjecture. In the 2nd scene, I don't think they were racing anyone, they were trying to get somewhere in a hurry, either to stop, start, or witness something before it was too late.

Also, the film was set in modern times (for the movie) so it took place in the mid-late 1980s.
