Hey all, I have recently inherited a `72 Thinline, all blond, it plays very well, but needs some TLC, mainly electronics overhaul. The main problem is the pick-guard. It is Mother of Pearl and it has badly `browned`in the sun.

I believe the guitar has been standing a long time in an empty room exposed to the sun.

I was thinking I could get it back to white and shiny with fine meshes and polishing compounds, as you would faded car head lights etc, but, I`d like to check if any other folks have attempted this and do they have any advice?

It’s a reissue. Just buy a new guard. Trying to restore the original may be frugal and fruitless. Sounds like something I would do. ;>)

a low dilution of vinegar might help (not whilst it's attached to the guitar, though). A replacement guard is probably an easier option.

    Howdy and welcome!
I’d gently suggest a new pickguard.

New pickguard. You won't be able to undo the UV damage. Myself, I would leave it, and just consider it part of the guitar's story.

You have any pictures of the guitar and pickguard in question?

New one and you might even want a different color. White 3-ply, tortoise etc depending on the body color.

I bet the aged one looks better.

I'd be more worried about what the exposure to the sun might have done to the rest of the guitar. Pickguards are meant to be replaced; least of your worries until it falls off.
