Greetings, I'm looking at an alleged '71 Telecaster for sale and would appreciate any informed input.

All I have to go by are these photos, are there any obvious red flags or anything that looks questionable? Advertised as all original other than the neck pu, which is supposedly period correct. Estimated value? Thanks for your help.

Like you said, other than the neck pup. Looks legit to me.

Looks nice! No way to really place a value on it without tearing it apart and close inspection. But if the seller is trustworthy and is willing to do a return if needed, then those are all in your favor.

Yeah, I hear ya with no gut shots. Seller is an individual on another forum with excellent 'street cred' there for what that's worth. Purchased from Emerald City a year ago advertised as described. No reason to be suspicious, just trying to do some level of due diligence.

I'm not super dialed in to current market values but I would say it's worth around $3,000. I'm sure there are others on here that would have a better idea.

Agree, as long as it is relatively unmolested.

Look legit to me as well. I would value it a little higher, at around 4k.

I thought it looked like an emerald city background

I think I’d want pictures of it right now

the stuff I see them selling is what they say it is (at least from pictures)

That’s exactly what the neck pickup in my 72 looks like, wonder what it is?

Right on, and I have asked for clarification regarding the pickup.

    Thank you.

Weirdness going on with intonation. Bridge pickup looks odd.

    Have you contact Emerald City?

I'm asking because they can give you some additional input.... if you get someone. They never responded to me after I purchased tho. That's a crapshoot.

Can’t believe it’s set up correctly like that. Bridge p/u apart from the crud, looks like it should to me.
No red flags that I see

After more conversations with the seller I am comfortable enough to give it a go, should have it in my grubby hands soon.

$4-5K depending on condition of frets, electronics, truss rod, cosmetics, original parts. All tha kind of stuff. Looks legit, with the exception of the neck pickup.

Arrived Friday, as good or better than described by seller. Nice overall patina with miscellaneous rubs, nicks and finish checks throughout the body. Frets have moderate wear and the fret board is pretty darn clean. The setup is on the low side but no buzzes and it plays nicely.

All features check out fine for what it's claimed to be. A peek under the hood (back of control plate) would be nice.

If you lift the pickguard off you'll probably see a really nice suntan.

Sometimes a guitar plays in tune with what appears to be 'backwards' intonation on the saddles like that. Rick Miller's '59 Dano with the rosewood bridge is like that.

The intonation seems ok but I will have my tech with much more experience than I check it out and opine.

I'll try to get a pic or two under her skirt.

Wow! Great guitar. I can't believe that action doesn't buzz - good for you! What is it strung with? It could explain the odd saddle/intonation arrangement. Your pix look nicer than the seller's. Color looks more natural.

Hopefully the frets are in good shape. My 74 also had very low action without buzzing. But the frets were barely more than indicators - and several layers of lacquer build up made it feel fretless. I couldn't stand it and refretted and refinished the fingerboard. Hopefully you won't run into this. Great instrument!

Came strung with Elixir 11s. I may play around with the action a bit anyway, I typically like it a bit higher.

One interesting thing the photos don't show is the visible lighter blond outline where the ash tray was left on for an extended period of time while the guitar was exposed to light.
