So, I posted a while back when I was deciding between a 63 Vibroverb and 6G4A Super that came my way. I chose the Super: the commentary offered here was right on the mark when I a/b’d them.
Until this amp, I’ve been no fan of 10’s. I’ve owned three or four good vintage Super Reverbs, trying to fall in love with that iconic amp, but never could. Kept coming back to my beloved 15’s—64 VV, 56 5e5-a tweed Pro, and, lately, 62 Brown Pro that was part of the brown Super deal.

The Super has been a revelation as to 10’s. It’s proved to be everything I’d hoped a SR would be. My Super’s no collectors’ piece-has a replaced baffle board because a prior owner had installed a ‘15, and there’s a shallow, 1/2” semi circle chiseled out of the inside front edge to accommodate that speaker. The 15 is long gone, of course, so speakers aren’t original. However, it’s loaded with brown bell, alnico 10k5’s with original cones from a Cocert that are killer. Tolex and grill could use a cleaning but are otherwise quite nice. The innards are original, save filter caps-original tranny’s, astron caps and such all there.

Bottom line, I’ve become so enamored of the Super, I’m thinking about another. Perhaps the earlier 6g4 this time, just for variety. Was hoping to tap the knowledge and expertise of the forum to gain some insights into how I might expect the earlier circuit might differ from the A version-not technical stuff (I know the Trem circuits are different, extra pre amp tube, etc). Rather, I’m wondering about qualitative differences I might expect-tone, gain, headroom, grit and so forth. That, and observations on how different the trems actually are in the two versions would be welcomed and appreciated.

The 10K5's are pretty coveted Oxfords. Do yours have the brown bell covers? I think those speakers are actually ceramic magnets but the covers make them look like alnicos.?
Like this?: (this is a 12 but the 10's look similar)

I guess, as a general matter, I lean toward vintage Jensens (though JBL D's are always my fav's in everything); that said, I'm really liking the sound of these Oxfords.

By the by, my tech ignorance is world class. What power transformer is this? I know the bottom code is tough to read from the pic (hard to get my phone in there), but it looks to me like 808213

606-2 1962.
Google is your friend… search returns the info that this is a blonde Bassman / Super transformer. Handful of 6G4A on reverb with this transformer and mercury mag lists it as their blonde bassman replacement. My 1960 super has the tweed Bassman transformer 8087 just fyi so yours is prob original

The top number is Fender part number 125P5B. The lower number is the manufacturer's EIA code; 606=Woodard Schumacher, 2=1962 and 13=the week of the year.

My Sept. 1960 has the earlier 8087 power transformer. It came to me with a pair of Eminence 1028k's which I replaced with a pair of 1961 Jensen P10Q's from a '61 Concert. The P10Q's were reconed at Weber with their 10A125 cone and 30 watt voice coil. I've tried more than a few sets of 10's in this amp and, to me, nothing sounds as good as the Jensen's.

This sure looks like a dandy, though certainly not cheap:

Yeah and for that price I would like to see either the original Jensen P10R speakers or a set of period correct P10Q's. The amp is actually a January 1961 from the "KA" code on the tube chart.

Interesting. I’m pretty much a 15 guy, and I’ve loved the D140f I’m my tweed and brown Pro’s. Certainly in my Vibroverb. Of course, they’re different amps, and speaker scale is radically different, so I bow to your experience. Thanks, Steve

I hear obvious differences between the 6G4A and the 5G4 version - the 5G4 being a bit more mid-rich and touch sensitive. The 6G4A being cleaner and more stout.

That said, don't think I've heard the 6G4 without the "A" yet. Could be somewhere in the middle. The changes in every brownface amp was so frequent that it's hard to say which was the standard. There's also the "center volume" knob versions, which also sound different.

A brown Super clone is an amp I'd like to own someday. As for 10" speakers, the Mojotone Anthems have been getting a lot of great feedback for old vintage tones.
