Find an older Epiphone Valve Junior; that is exactly what you've described. These can be had for less than a Ben Franklin.

me too but it doesn't have an el84 and he may not want to do a circuit change.

This Vox is a great modeling amp. It can be set to 1 watts up to 20 watts. I own it.

I had a Kustom Defender 5(H) head. One 12ax7, one EL84, one knob. Lots of tone, but a lot louder than expected!

I just want a small practice amp and I usually have some 12ax7 tubes and el84 tubes lying around this works for me.

The Bugera v5 is what you want if you want built in reverb. Otherwise the Vox AC4 series are all nice little beasts.

I had an Epiphone Valve Special combo that, with a speaker swap, sounded really good.
How about a Joyo Sweet Baby?
Also, with a bit of patience, there are a LOT of cool vintage amps that size...student amps, amps meant to pair with inexpensive lap steels...I've had a bunch of them and never paid more than 300. My current one is a 47 Gretsch Rex/Magnatone in MOTS, but there are others I should have kept instead...

I've been using a Tone King Gremlin for about a year now and really love it. They are pricey new and don't pop up used very often. I was reluctant to spend so much money on a small amp but I am glad I did and can't see myself ever selling it off.

I have a lot of amps but the Gremlin gets the most playing time including at most gigs (but I do have it mic'd up).

I find for quiet home use it doesn't really matter what amp I use - the volume is usually too low for the amp be to pushed into the sweet spot.

Cranked up the Gremlin sounds great. I gig with a very controlled drummer and we intentionally keep a very moderate overall volume.

I also have a Vox AC 10 which is far better value for money and a Tweed Deluxe (5e3). I really like them both but they don't get much playing time since I bought the Gremlin.

I used to gig with a Silver faced Twin, a Tweed Super or a Deluxe Reverb - all great amps but overkill for my current situation.

    Good luck.

I have a version 3 valve jr head. I run it thru my 4x12 cab with Jensen speakers.
It sounds Killer! With some guitars ( My 61 SG clone and P90 equipped LP) It's kinda dark with my Tele . So depends on what you are looking for.
I'd recommend it if you want a " Marshally " tone.

VHT Special 6 Ultra. Comes with a 6V6, but you can replace with different power tubes. A fantastic 6 watt amp. The Ultra has a faux attenuator and extra gain stage over the Special 6. You can get either in head form to hook up to you favorite 8ohm cab too.

Edit: @gwjensen just beat me to it.

I had a Bugera V5 Infinium that I really liked. It has the EL84 and 12AX7 tubes you want, plus built in reverb and a 3 position attenuater: .1W, 1W, and 5W. Perfect practice amp. New for under $200.

I have a Swart STR Tweed that is 5 watts.

It's not what I would call versatile - it's sounds are Tweed, and higher gain Tweed. Tweed purists might disagree and say it's got its own unique Swart voice, which might be true. I use it when I'm in the mood for something other than "delicate", "glassy", or "refined".

It uses 1 6v6 power tube, though.

I love it, especially when I'm in the mood for.. Tweed.
