Once again, at home a 12AX7 sounded great in V1, but, at the gig a 12AT7 in V1 AND V2 sounded so incredibly sweet!
This is a pattern with me that I am finally figuring out!

Charlie, try a 5751 or a 12AY7 in V1. They are lower gain tubes in the 12AX7 family. Yes, the AT/AU tubes will work in those positi9ns, but they were designed as driver tubes. The AX family is better in tone positions, ime.
And...what is a 5C5 doing with noval tubes in it? Those should be octal. Are you sure this is not a 5D5....With a 5C5 tube chart??

    Actually...it's got a 5B5 tube chart!
    Ahhh, Fender.
The factory layout drawing I have for 5C5 matches my amp exadctly (5D5 is different) and on v1 and v2, it says 6sc7 (12ax7) 6sc7 (12ay7) 6sc7 (12ay7).
So there's your advice about the AY's.
Man...my old time radio dude took ill just as I was about to buy a load from him. I was getting tested 12a*7 pulls for about $2.50 each. Now I can't bear to pay anybody else's prices!
I won't even tell you what I've been paying for those lovely brown-base Tung-Sol 5881s...
