Super helpful thread!
I'm new here and quite interested in building amps. This thread is awe inspiring. Keep up the good work.
power tranny swap?
The 5C3 started to misbehave. I can't say that it wasn't acting up from the very start though. Here is symptoms and there is question.
Heat and Stink
The PT got hot and started to give off that smell, even in standby mode. The 2amp fuse didn't blow. It was a cheap used PT from the get go so I'm not too concerned. I am going to replace with another used cheap PT close to the same specs maybe a bit beefier.
The old PT did not have a center tap on the 6.3 volt heaters so I fabricated the artificial CT according to RobRob. The "new" PT has both CTs on the 5.0 and 6.3 heaters. Is it OK to just cap the two CTs and hook it up the same as before?
tried it like I said - nuthin'
hmmmm I thought let me take some voltages
HT= 398 DC to ground to each
line = 121
recto heaters = nuthin'
other heaters = nuthin'
Sommat must be up with the center taps.
each center tap has 2 wires.
I soldererd them together (individually) and tried again.- Bingo!
5.2 volts at the recto heaters
6.5 volts at the jewel terminals
played for an hour or so - no stink.
