Oh my goodness! This one should be a must-see to anyone that relics guitars. So they can learn a thing or two

That is absolutely gorgeous. I wouldn't dare sully this thread with my '54 Esquire lookalike, but that was the sort of look I was going for in terms of wear. I never understand why some artificial relics look so badly beaten up, when a real near 70 year old guitar doesn't.

If I win the lottery before it's sold I'll be in touch. ;):)

Your listing says the original strings are still in the case!?!? Wow.

Have you ever taken a caliper to them for the gauges?

No, taking a caliper to them never occurred to me. But coincidently just as you wrote I was sent a pic of the guitar with the strings. The windings are quite unique.

    Thank you!

I have a thread somewhere on TDPRI about original equipment vintage strings on Broad-No-Telecasters, how they were a ground and polished round wound, nickel alloy made by Mapes.

Those pics seem to confirm the polished nickel ground round wound part!

I have a very good idea what the gauges were, but a caliper to those strings would be like gold to me.

You are right - polished round wound. I could never have foreseen that a Radio Shack reader at the bottom of the tool box would have it's day. These things were piano strings, Dick Dale / SRV. .13 - .57

Here is a box of Hawaiian strings, but they were made by the same company just different gauges.

And here's the page from the 1950 Fender Catalog for Mapes strings.
