I really should know this stuff but it's something I've not done before...

Anyway, I have a brand new high quality 5 way sat in the box that a mate wanted me to put in his cheap strat but then decided not to bother upgrading and sold the guitar.

I have a Ibanez Noodles Talman with a strat-style 3 way and a pair of P90's, this 5 way feels much nicer than what's in it, plus I was thinking I could have more switching options.

I'm presuming I could do ... Bridge, Parallel, Series and Neck, with a standard 5 way? not sure what I would do on the spare position, maybe a direct output for the bridge, or some kind of 'filter-esque tone cap' thing.. any good ideas (and a diagram would be useful) it's just a single vol and tone like a Tele really so I can adapt from a tele layout or whatever.

I'm just a bridge rocker usually (all my other guitars only have a bridge pickup) so it doesn't really matter what I do, but it would be fun to have some more options.

    Cheers.

Braided wire or plain wire on the P90's?

Hey @2HBStrat from what I can see it's just regular wire.... but it's gone midnight here so I'm not ripping it all apart, there's just a single black wire coming out of them, so I presume it a core for the hot and a screen around that for the ground? .. does that sound right? If not I can take it apart and check the switch end tomorrow. :)

You've sort of answered your own question here.

I would leave it with the 3 way switch, but I prefer simple.
If the 3 way switch feels cheap, replace it with a better 3 way, or deoxit it.

Sometimes that single black wire will be hiding 4 or 5 conductors under it's insulation. You need to carefully strip back an inch or so of the outer insulation so you can see how many conductors are in their. A four conductor lead will give you more switching options.

crikey!....o_O.. thought I'd have a look under the hood for the first time in 10yrs... I think this was my first wiring mod, looks like I went the max...

I've only just got it out again cleaned it up and put new strings on it.... feels like coming home...:)

these p90s were just 2 wire and I wired them to the switch as required.... no separate shield wire like for a metal cover pu.. plastic covers on p90s, no problem....

this guitar is quiet in all positions, no hum or fizz, no muddy pu's....and it cranks...

I tried a few different switches/wiring schemes on that guitar it was never going to be the final job...it was like a test bed...

you put it back together to check the latest one and it works great, so you don't open it back up to fix the cosmetics at that point...;)

    good to go..move on..:)

Cheers, I don't think the neck in pos 1 and 5 would work for me very well, but thanks anyway. :)

I'll just have to have a think about what's gonna work the best for me, this is in the lead at the moment I think. simple wiring and 4 of the positions have the bridge in play.

I've got two p90s in my guitar and I wired them half out of phase. I really like it, those suckers quack! I haven't tried them in series, but I notice most people say two p90s in series is very muddy. You might want to try in series, out of phase instead. It's supposed to give a more "honky" kind of tone.

    2. Neck + Bridge in Parallel Half Out of Phase
    3. Neck + Bridge in Parallel
    4. Neck + Bridge in Series Out of Phase
