wondering if the 5 holes on a vintage style guard are common holes on 8 hole style, or would one have to drill 8 new holes? Thanks.

MIA, MIJ, MIM, Squier all seem to vary a bit in my experience

Depending on your goal you can buy most iterations in both styles these days

I just bought a five hole single ply for this MJT. It needed the extra 3 holes so I drilled them out and used a countersink bit.
