Interesting, that the outside threads come preheated with Loctite.

I have used the brass inserts designed for wood ("knife edge) in the past for making jigs, and I can confirm that they are challenging to install straight. I think I'll give these a shot. Looks like they are about $1 each in packs of 10.

If the inserts have lock-tite on them, you'll definitely want to remove the lock-tite before installing them in wood

A wire brush and some solvent like lacquer thinner should do it

You'll also want to make sure you use a "bottom" tap with the inserts with the 5/16"-18 external thread - a "bottom" tap will cut deeper threads closer to a hole's bottom than a taper or plug tap will

EDIT: As you can see in the first picture (sort of) I got the side dots in. I also wet sanded the neck to 1500 and the headstock to 2000 and polished both a little. The guitar still needs a string tree. Made a few more adjustments to the setup, still need to adjust the pickup heights though.

I think the greatest praise one builder can give to another is to lust over their build. I guess, really, that’s all that needs to be said.

Pretty close to where I wanted it.

On future glue ups I find electrical tape works insanely well (tightly wrapped from front to back) to hold these 2 pieces together. Makes for a good joint and easy cleanup too as it holds a lot of the squeeze out.
