I've got this favourite little piece that I play a lot... it seems to work Ok and it could be built upon with more verses.... with a bridge section to stretch it out, etc...
it uses E A B7 chords with a few other jazzier 9ths an m7ths...thrown in on the run back...
I think it's "blues"..I played it to a friend.. he said "oh, some jazz"... and he's an old pro ?...mmm? mmkk then ...

I've had Guitar Pro 5 loaded on this PC for ages though I haven't used it much...
Today I tabbed the piece out on GP with the chord changes >*for the first time!...... it's hard to write the full complexity atm , as I finger pick on a Tele.. slides /bends/ pauses etc...

the file sounds like an old church pianist banging it out in 4/4,,, with all her might...,, good enough to hear the song changes for now...

it's got 20 bars... 9 first..returning to the start chord , then 11,,,, then you repeat that lot again as needed... much the same chords in both stanzas... almost like a call and response feel... with a bit extra to say..;)
the second stanza of 11 bars has 2 bars repeated to emphasize how I want it to feel... mmmkkk...;)

    well, 18 main bars then,,,...

Is there something weird about that in musical terms?....

It was good to get the guts of it down on a GP file and title/save it.... yay! a first song on the digital staff...;)

though I'd like to dress it up a bit more.... get more of a guitar feel to it on GP...a strum pattern ... is that easily done on GP5?...

    so many icons up there...

    Two things I know:

    1. I don't really understand what you're describing in terms of the structure of your song

    B. There is no reason that a song needs to fit any particular structure. Did John Lee Hooker play blues? Yes. Were they always 12 bars? Nope. Was it still good music. Yes!

Try writing out the chord sequence something like this and then we can all have a look at it.

    |A///|A///|A///|A///|

    |D///|D///|A///|A///|

    |E///|D///|A///|E///|

I've heard that making race records is what solidified the short, 12 bar style. Before that, blues players could ramble on and on, kinda like the original post.

Apparently the OP isn't in any sort of race it would seem.

I'll give it a literary shot.... an open E coming up to a bar e first line...back to the top.
the two stanzas? just flow into eachother and repeat.

    |E///|G#7///|A///|A///|
    |^e///|C#9///|F#m///|B7///|B7///|

    |E///|G#7///|C#9///|C#9//C9||F#m///|
    |C#9///|C#9//C9|F#m///|F#7///|B7///|B7///| (single E to end)

that's the basic progression... the melody moves through it with fingerpicking...

    make sense?...

I'd have to hear it. I just played your changes and some of it sounded weird to me. Maybe it would make more sense if you played it.

I grabbed some sound off a jvc camcorder vid first thing this morning... no warm up.. just switched the gear on and straight into it... the fingers were a bit stiff... ;)

mid position on the P90 Tele... a bit honky through the cam...

I tried to access your link, said it couldn't be found and maybe it was a private account that you need to log into

    Cheers,

    (I assume ^e is a typo for E.)

The progression makes sense to me.

The first four bars are I III7 IV IV, the G#7 is a little out of place, but it slides into A.

The next four ^H^H^H^H five bars is a I VI ii V, a classic turnaround. If you shortened the B7 to one bar instead of two, there's your first 8.

In the second half, you're basically going around the circle of fifths from G# to B (and E) so you can't argue with that. If you're happy with the phrase length, it is what it is.

Okay, I see those other examples. Just seems a little clunky. The F# in G#7 want to resolve to an E#.

The progression has the potential to be the basis of a perfectly decent song. There are some sweet sounds in there.

I would definitely trim some of the phrases to four or eight bars though.

thanks guys. did the soundcloud link work OK?, I may have to change settings? I only set it up to do this clip yesterday....

I can see the 2xB7 adds extra bars.... I might play around with that.... if I had a Bass player or a drummer here they would have grilled me on that.

I prefer to call G#7> A flat7 ;)..... I don't know where those chords/progression came from.... purely out of my head and trial and error for the next chord..

I can't recall hearing a song and trying to do a similar feel..... though I've probably heard those changes a 1000 times in other songs....;)

    a subliminal song,..;)

where can I host/post a vid that isn't youtube that will link in here?...
