    Hey all,

I'm building a tele for my buddy and the neck will be 2 pc maple. The fingerboard is flatsawn and the neck blank is quartersawn.

    Cool? Lame? Normal? Problematic? Non-issue?

I would advise against this. When exposed to changes in temperature and especially humidity, the fingerboard will want to swell and shrink in a direction perpendicular to the rest of the neck. This could cause warping and/or cracking issues. At the very least, the joint between the fingerboard and the neck will drift a little and end up showing through the finish, even if you never have any serious stability problems.

If you can, use quartersawn maple for the fingerboard as well and you'll have a rock solid neck that will stay stable for the life of the instrument.
