guys need your input, im hunting for an AVRI, i wanted a 2013 model with that thin lacquer coat cause i heard the older models tend to chip off easily. so recently i came across a used AVRI 52 but its made in 1997, ive not seen any of those around so im wondering if its a good deal, the price is about 1k usd.

just a note, i like thick necks and i dont mind going for a 2013 model if it suits my needs more

    cheers

They made some changes to the 52ri in 1998.
The 82 to 97 52ri's weren't quite as "correct" and the neck was a little thinner than the
    1998-2012 models.
2013 AV52ri's have a thicker neck than any that came before, and you already know about the thinner "flash finish".

If you're going to drop that much money on a guitar how about you play both of them and see which one you like better?!

Even though the 'first generation' of 52AVRI's have thinner necks and aren't as 'period correct' don't these fetch mrs money in the used market for some reason? Is it because they were made in the Corona factory?

The necks on the pre-98 '52 RI's are real thin, while the new so called Pure Vintage '52 Tele has a rather fat neck.

If you're worried about paint chipping stay away from the new flash coated av's.. My AV 52 is a case queen that's never left my living room and it's still managed to get a couple chips.

i thought it was nitro so the AVRI will dent? seems wrong then, sigh

im actually worried of the flaking, i heard the older AVRI's had this problem where once it chips you can kinda peel off the paint.

    aye noted

I owned a 1997 AVRI 52 Tele.It had a thick finish...after years of playing it hardly showed any wear and tear.I own a 2007 and 2011 AVRI 52s and they have thinner finishes that also showed more wear a lot faster. The neck on my 1997 was a thinner C profile compared to the somewhat chunkier U shape of my 2007 and 2011 ones.Still that 1997 was a great guitar regardless.

I used to own a '97 52 AVRI that had a thin neck and thick poly undercoat, neither of which I cared for at all. I now have a 2012 Pure Vintage 52 that's the opposite: thick neck and very thin nitro finish. I much prefer this over the one from '97.
FWIW I haven't had issues with the paint flaking off any 52 reissue. The new ones do ding very easily though.

Have you played the '97? Does it feel/sound right? If it speaks to you, grab it.
