I'm looking at a '78 Pro Reverb on my local Craig's List, currently listed for $850 or possible trades.

I'm not real familiar with these amps. Kind of looks like an "almost" Twin, at 70 watts, 2x12 speakers.

I'm looking for any opinions on the amp, price, and any other thoughts or bits of info on this amp, such as sound, breakup, volume, versatility, etc.

Thanks!

$850 is way overpriced- that thing should come in around $500 or so if its in pretty good shape...maybe $600 if it is in excellent condition. The 70 waters are the ones most folks will say stay away from. I played one for a day and it was loud but had some of the good Fender tone but it did not sound like the 40 watters. Most folks are pretty good about letting you try it out so maybe ask but I would be shocked if it sold for over $600.

I agree. That price is too much for an ultralinear. They don't sound that good. I suggest you find one a couple years older.

I'm glad I came here and asked! So if I tried it and liked the sound well enough, around $500 would be a fair price for this amp in average condition?

How was this model positioned/marketed, compared to the Twin? Is it all clean silverface headroom, or can i get it to break up a little without shattering windows? Any other notable attributes?

Thanks all. I'm starting to get that apprehensive feeling, but a big loud Fender amp is still kind of appealing ...

My first real Fender amp was a late 70's Pro Reverb. Awesome sounding clean amp, mine didn't break up much at all until after the neighbors ears started bleeding. Go try it, you just might fall in love. I sure wish I had mine back.

Well, my guy just yanked any potential deal out from under me, so it doesn't matter now ... Oh well, that's life in the big city. Thanks all for your knowledge, as always. Have a good Monday!

The ultralinears do not have sweet spots, they are clean, clean and clean. if you want dirt you will have to use a pedal. I personally would not want one of those things.

My suggestion is for you to keep looking.
