I'm not commenting on the originality of the guitar on eBay right now but what I do know is that the original metal flake finishes were not sprayed in the Fender factory and do not have the same features as a guitar painted by Fender.

Guitar bodies, and sometimes partly complete guitars were sent to a local car shop to be painted as Fender did not work with this kind of paint.

Also because they were painted by the workers at the car shop, it is not uncommon to see paint on earth cables and metal parts.

A lot of original metal flake finishes are brought into question because most people believe that they were painted at the Fullerton factory when they weren't.

Genuine or not - it's ugly.

Wouldn't the finish underneath the pickguard be a stronger colour that the rest of the guitar after 40+ years or does that not apply to this colour?

Here's an original Red Sparkle finish on a '63 Strat.

Thanks - that hasn't faded much at all.

I used to see this with metallic cars when I was in the motor-trade - metallics never faded as much as flat colours. Probably reflects more light than it absorbs.
