1959 Les Paul Jr. Build

    so anyway I bought a chunk of honduran mahagany to build me a couple of 1958 les pauls and I had just enough scrap left over to build a Jr. and I had the blueprints so here it go's.,, the only piece I had for the neck was 1"x2" but thats enough i think, started off with four pieces

    but thats not enough so I added another piece at the base

    but it's only 2" wide , oh i can fix that, that makes seven pieces

    didnt have a big enough blank for a one piece body so it's a two piece, and it's a 1/4" thinner, oh well it will be lighter anyway

    This is going to be a cool thread, Les Paul Juniors are simply amazing guitars.

    Just make sure to keep the neck nice a fat, it's not a proper junior without something to hold onto.

    ran the neck base thru the buzzsaw

    made a neck pocket template

    routed it out

    laser beamed to check straightness, all is good

    time to route the truss rod slot, i got a two way truss rod so the route is straight, pretty much not period correct so dont tell anybody

    thats not so bad

    used a round router bit to make a nice access slot thing

    glued on a little rosewood and trimmed it up

    it works really well

    grind time, this is all i use to shape the neck, well a little sandpaper too

    most 59's had fat frets but some early ones had thinner ones, i have thinner ones here so thinner it is, this time i tapped them in then tapped them sideways, they are in good and tight

    then the impossible happened, i got on ebay and found GIBSON transparent Cherry Red nitro lacquer, cant beat that , just what i always wanted

    made a template for the pickguard, not many pics of that, maybe i just cant find them
