$1500-ish to spend, not sure what “problem” to “solve”

So in this strange time, all the nickels and dimes I’m not spending on lunches, drumheads, straps, booze etc. have surprised me by turning into about 2k with nowhere it needs to be, and I’m trying to figure if I should throw it at a made-up problem like “not enough gear”

(note: wife also makes good money, I really don’t need to sit on it for a rainy day if I don’t want to)

I don’t have many gaps in my gear stash, but basically contemplating 3 “problems”

I don’t have a good acoustic (though I’d love to do a Martin kit, $600-ish)
I don’t have a boooooteeeeeek amp (though I have a Mojotone GA-5/tweed champ clone and Weber Princeton Reverb on the bench)
I don’t have Jazzmaster, Jag, or Jazz Bass, and there aren’t many other bases I don’t have covered that I wish I did (would DIY, $600-ish each)

Of these three, what would you worry about first? Yes, I know it’s an incredibly first-world problem.

I’d get a nice acoustic guitar. $600 for a Martin seems like a steal.

If you're carrying any credit card debt, throw it at that.

If not, get the Martin kit!

A nice acoustic guitar for sure. Forget the "kit" idea for a good acoustic.

    3 problems? $2k.
    I think you're good:

Offset; pick up a used player series jag or Japanese reissue version for around $500 and DIY a mustang bridge onto it.

Booteeeeek amp; Frenzel has thier one flagship head on sale for like $800.

Then proceed on the Martin as planned.

You'll just need to find more problems by the time you get more money.

Do you think the kit is too hard, the guitar you can make not nice enough, somewhere in-between, or something I don’t know to ask? The idea that I could get a USA made solid-wood spruce-n-rosewood kit for under $600 shipped if I just try hard enough is powerfully compelling bang for one’s buck.

How in heck do I know which option you'll like the most?

Not to be Debbie Downer, but were it me: Bank it.

I am fortunate that I haven't really been affected by the pandemic yet. Most of my friends are also in comfortable, professional situations and haven't been affected either. In middle age, and as professionals in a healthy market, we don't hang out with many of the service industry people who have already been screwed.

There will be macro type effects from all of this - shrinking of the national economy - that won't be understood or felt for a while.

Last week, I bought five-year-old Martin OM-21 with a Custom Shop stamp for $1,800, twice as much as I’ve paid for a guitar previously.

It is truly a joy to play. I’m distinctly sounding notes that I barely heard on my other guitars.

How much other gear do you have and are you super attached to it sentimentally?

I vote for selling off some stuff and turning that $2k into more for something really nice. That’s what I’d do at least.

Wait for this Corona crap to roll over and then put it towards a once in a life time trip. Just because you got the money selling great didn't mean you have to put it straight back into gear

I've been able to buy quite a few good used guitars with $1500 at my disposal.

Here's some of the last used guitars Ive bought.

    $923 - '81 Martin 7-28
$120 - '96 MIJ Fender Sonic Blue Jagstang
$100 - '09 Fender Highway One Honey Blonde Tele
    $286 - '05 Gibson Les Paul Studio

All 4 of the above guitars cost a total of $1429.

My advice would be to really stretch the $1500 you have, and try to hunt down as many good quality used guitars as you can find, that will fill in the gaps in your collection.

CAE06F44-DCAC-4480-955F-A9417D4BD7B4.jpeg Check out a PRS SE Hollow body Piezo. I got one in August and can’t seem to want to put it down. I gigged last nite with it it gives me great RnR tone and I can roll it quickly into a great acoustic tune with no gear change.
