Same thing at my house every week. Been watching since 1975 and can't miss it, even when it sucks. And totally with you on John Mulaney. Dude is brilliant.

Wow, I didn't know Sun Ra and Miles played SNL.

    When was that?
    I'm guessing the '80s?
I did not have a TV or allow a TV to be brought into my home during the 1980s.
I did see Sun Ra live a few times then though.

My favorite Machine Gun Kelly moment was the close, when everyone was onstage waving and hugging and saying goodnight. MGK and Pete Davidson must have hit it off during the week; in the last second or two on air, Pete Davidson dove at MGK, tackled him, and (I think) rolled off the stage or off camera or something. It looked like two 13-year-old best friends who hadn't seen each other for a month. I love Pete Davidson.

Yes, I noticed her. She must be good to be in the SNL band. She sounds great as they go to break.

And another generation would say Dana Carvey or Phil Hartman. Another would say Chris Farley. And another would say Will Ferrell. So maybe I’m not giving them enough credit for their staying power.

From what I know, Zoomers seem to like Pete Davidson....not even sure if he’s still on the show...?

I didn't love the MGK performance but do think SNL is still a great show. It's always been hit or miss, some things have me rolling and other things I don't find funny at all. It's always been like that for me.

My favorite memories of SNL include Garret Morris interpreting the news for the hearing impared.

Our top story tonight... OUR TOP STORY TONIGHT!

My dad laughed so hard he cried.

As for musical guests, I watch each week hoping I'll find some new band I like. It rarely happens. But every once in a while... last week wasn't it, but I've seen a lot worse.

I found one the other night on Jimmy Fallon. Fontaines DC. DC stands for Dublin City. Great sound, sullen mystical poetry, loud guitars.

    From the Gilda fan club:

“And what’s all this about the Iranian ostriches?...leave those birds alone!!”

    “ It’s Hostages, Miss Latella...Iranian Hostages...”

    nevermind...

Same here. Also, Garrett as Chico Esquela.

    Today is Garrett's 84th birthday.

Who's gonna step up? That kind of implies this guy is the last hope for guitar, or is doing the world of guitar some sort of favor that others don't want to do.

There are tons of really good present day guitar oriented bands/artists that would love to step up if SNL gave them the opportunity.

Some that I like, off the top of my head, include:

    Big Thief
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
    Ty Segall
    Sam Evian
    Flasher
    Ex Hex
    Deerhunter
    The Black Lips
    Dungen
    Brittany Howard
    Ohmme
    Madi Cunningham
    Deep Sea Diver
    Wilco

Sorry, I was riffing on old guys shaking fists at clouds grumbling about kids today etc.
Not saying those guys are the last hope for guitar bands.
We do see less guitar pop though, right?
Or popular music that features guitars?

    Wilco?
    Those are old guys too!
If you think Wilco is a hot new band, hey, who am I to judge!

Like I said, I don't like MGK, but the song's image of text message relationships changing when trapped in an elevator and forced to interact in real time was valid.
Bands I don't like is not the same as bands that suck!
It would be funny as hell if SNL had all the geriatric bands instead of so many offensive-to-guys-my-age bands!

Every generation gets to have their own music. Our time has come and gone. Or have we forgotten what our parents said of "our" music? I'm content with what I like and don't begrudge them theirs. I even appreciate rap, even if I don't like it.

I don’t think Wilco is a hot new band, but I do think the best music (and the best work in any field) is produced not by the hot new people or the geriatrics, but by those who fall in between those two extremes. Unfortunately, SNL seems to be interested only in the geriatrics (Springsteen, Elton John, etc) or the hot new acts (Dua Lipa, the bro-country guy they had on the last show, etc.) I don’t see why they wouldn’t book the best bands, or even the best out of the current crop of hot bands. This is what Fallon, Colbert, and other successful tv shows do, but SNL is first and foremost interested in what’s hot with little regard for quality.
