    Weapons grade hypocrisy from Lennon.

I've never liked that song. It's droning and fat-headed. Who would want to live in a world where we are all the same?

People's religious and political beliefs are deeply held expressions of their moral and ethical world view. It's extremely hard to manage these differences, and we often fail at it. But imagining a world where nobody has any views that differ is creepy.

I've always thought that song was a product of easy access to drugs and being surrounded by people who never say "no" to you.

I get the feeling John was more critical of behavior rather than beliefs or views. He was against killing and the lyrics wonder if the beliefs behind the behavior were taken away would the behavior also disappear? Unfortunately it's not that simple: many of the same beliefs and views responsible for bad behavior motivate people to positive/good behavior as well. The problem is us. And I think John knew this too. He just wanted to give us something to think about. And he wrapped it up in a nice melody.

Imagine trying to talk about this song in any kind of meaningful way in a place that forbids discussing its subject matter.

    Imagine there's no Heaven
    It's easy if you try
    No Hell below us
    Above us only sky
Imagine all the people livin' for today

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothin' to kill or die for
    And no religion, too
Imagine all the people livin' life in peace

Chaos? Sounds like a far better world to me.

He ticked off a list of all the major sources of conflict. Imagine if we didn't have anything to fight about...except guitars of course.

John Lennon was a goofball. But when it came to his desire for Peace on Earth, I think he took it pretty seriously.

Simple can be sublime. I think that is the case here.

A lot of people write a lot of stuff that doesn't necessarily reflect who they are or how they actually feel.
Nobody wonders if he really likes playground slides because of Helter Skelter.

I'm looking at someone's quote which reads "He who angers you conquers you"

    Somehow that seems appropriate here.

Who said that? The operation of a business changes vastly with its scale. Ask any business owner that has grown a successful business. It would be naive to think otherwise.

I don't disagree, it's not one of his best.

What? I think you're reading WAY too far into the song.

I think this sums up most Beatle-related music after 1967 or so.

If I “liked” your post in this thread, it means that you broke the rules.

What’s hard to imagine is discussion of a song that is directly about politics and religion, and yet not discussing politics or religion.
