I purchased a conglomeration of four bodies and four necks on Reverb this week…varying configurations. All from Mario Martin at Guitar Mill, my favorite “boutique” builder.

The four bodies:

1b) 1-pc alder 4lb 7oz, routed for standard Tele pickup configuration and controls, double bound with pearloid binding

2b) 2-pc alder 4lb 2oz, “Tele Custom” routing for pickups and controls (humbucker neck, standard bridge, two volume, two tone, pickup selector switch in upper bout)

3b) 3-pc swamp ash, 4lb 6oz, routed for two p90s, standard Tele control cavity

4b) 1-pc swamp ash, 4lb, routed for p90 in neck position and standard bridge, standard controls, double bound with black binding

And the necks (all 21 frets, 6105 fret wire, 1.65” nut width, drilled for 11/32” vintage style Kluson tuners and medium C profile):

1n) Birdseye maple, dark Indian rosewood fretboard, 9.5-12” compound radius

2n) Roasted 3A flame maple, Brazilian rosewood fretboard, 9.5-12” compound radius

3n) 1pc maple, 9.5” radius

4n) Maple, stripey Indian rosewood fretboard, 9.5” radius, broken nut

We’ll see what speaks to me as far as pairings go, but initial thoughts are:

1b & 1n = “1”
2b & 2n = “2”
3b & 3n = “3”
4b & 4n = “4”

I was thinking 1 would be perhaps Sage Green Metallic with a pearloid pickguard

2 might be Candy Apple Red or Lake Placid Blue, either with a black pickguard and silver top reflector-ish knobs

3 perhaps Taos Turquoise, Ocean Turquoise or Teal Green Metallic (or maybe a turquoise transparent) with a small parchment pickguard and parchment covered p90s

And 4 perhaps silver sparkle with a black paisley pickguard (if Bill Crook is willing to whip one up for me…currently not taking orders for a bit) and black covered p90

Debating on which, if any, would get a matching headstock…the silver sparkle seems like a natural fit.

I’ll have to rifle through my parts bin to see what I’ve got to put into these but I’m guessing I’ll need some metal bits and most certainly pickups. I’ve had some really nice sets from Cavalier and Lollar for single coils, Duncan Antiquities for the P90s and either Lollar Low-Wind Imperial or my beloved Haeussel ‘59 for the humbucker.

I’ll probably finish the necks myself and maybe one or two of the bodies but I’d outsource the silver sparkle and Candy Apple Red if I decide to go that way.

This should keep me busy for a while…ha

Guitar Mill stuff is pretty good. I remember when he started out...a very small operation.
I’ve bought odds and ends from Guitar Mill and have always been impressed. Bill Crook got some necks from them and didn’t necessarily love them. To each their own I guess. But I have a handful of Mario full-build guitars and absolutely love those. His selection of wood is pretty remarkable. I still only deal with him, his wife and their right hand guy…assuming there’s maybe 10 or so employees but I could be way off.

Those look like some really decent pieces. I can think of a lot of killer projects with those. The body with the P-90 routs would be an easy project to put together. I would go with a rosewood neck and a semi opaque finish due to the three-piece ash. Any color would be cool. I put together something similar.

Decided that the dual P90 guitar would be built for a friend with whom I collaborated on a Strat last year. He doesn’t know, so I enlisted his wife to give me some help on design and colors. We’re going with a pretty cool combo—Candy Tangerine, a maple fretboard and a light-colored (white/parchment/cream) small pickguard. Something shaped like one of these two I suppose…

Anyone got experience cutting pickguards? I’d like to use a Cabronita-style half guard on the dual p90 guitar, but still need to use the control plate given the rout. Looks like the Custom Shop makes a guitar with a similar configuration (see photo) but I haven’t found any pre-made pickguards like that. Figure I could buy a Cabronita guard and cut in for the control plate (then I don’t need to worry about any cuts requiring an edge bevel). Thoughts?

Do you have a Dremel Tool? Something like that would be fairly easy to do as you could just trace around the control plate and use their barrel sander tips. Just go slow and take your time and you should be able to get a good end result. I had to cut out a pickguard out of sheet material using a jig saw and a Dremel for this one.

Do you tend to keep the speed low? My only fear with a Dremel is melting.

Short answer - yes - lower speed, lighter pressure
I do my first shaping w/ one of the coarse metal cutter burrs.
A final hand-dressing w/ varied grit paper.

Yes! Keep the speed low for control and apply with a constant but light strokes until you get a small margin around your tracing and then finesse until you get it to where you want. I hand sand for the final touches.

Today I started sorting though my spare parts bin and ordering some things for these four.

I’ll have a couple neck humbuckers to choose from for the ‘72 Custom, and I had an as-of-yet unaccounted for Cavalier NoCaster Holy Grail Lion bridge pickup to use, so that was a pleasant surprise.

I ordered three pickguards from Warmoth, including a ‘72 Deluxe with no rout for a bridge or bridge pickup (so I’ll do that myself). I’m not a fan of the hourglass shaped bridge rout in the standard ‘72 Custom pickguards so I figured I’d start with the deluxe routed for a neck humbucker and cut the bridge rout myself, rectangular instead of hourglass so it’s nice and clean. Also ordered a standard white pearl pickguard for the body with the pearl binding—we’ll see how the material matches. Wasn’t sure if I should go with “white pearl” “pearloid” or “vintage pearl” from Warmoth for that. And last, got a bwb 3-ply for the silver sparkle body with the p90. I ordered a Cabronita-style half pickguard for the candy tangerine body for my buddy too. Got that through a site called “DecoBoom”…we shall see!

I think I’ll be placing a pretty sizeable order with Callaham within the next few days…need plenty of hardware. And some Kluson Supreme tuners—found one set used on Reverb and got a good price but I’ll need three more sets.

And the neck for the ‘72 is coming right along. Maybe two more coats of Tru-Oil with a steel-wool sanding in between. Or maybe after the next coat and the steel wool, I’ll just leave it…I did that on a high-end Strat build and love the way it feels.

I’ve been gathering parts since I purchased these bodies…focusing mostly on the one going to my buddy so I can be sure I can get straight to work on it when the body and neck arrives. I’ve got just about everything for that one except the pickups. I think I’m down to three choices for a P90 set: Duncan Antiquities, Rob Cavalier’s Bear AR90s, or ThroBak 52/54s. These three run the gamut on cost from ridiculously valued (Cavalier) to “is this price for a set???” (ThroBak). I’ve got an unpaid personal endorsement from a pro friend of mine on the ThroBaks…the only reason they’re in the running.

Any personal experience with the three above?
