Did he demo it to you with a PSU? If not, it’s likely to have come to you that way... Or an easy fix.

I lent a pedal to one guy once because he was thinking of buying it and the bastard ripped the battery plug. He didn't want to buy it and it wasn't a super complicated fix, but it's stupid that he broke it on loan. Of course he didn't pay for it.

If I'm checking out a pedal at Guitar Center and I accidentally break it, GC cannot legally force me to pay for it.

What they can do is tell me not to come into their store anymore.

If you're dealing with a friend, you might expect they would be a bit more charitable than a large chain store, but that's a two way street.

As I said previously, don't lend anything that you cant afford to lose, whether you're dealing with friends or the general public.

If your expectations of reality repeatedly leave you feeling let down, that's a good indication that it's time to adjust your expectations.

And you have just added to your arsenal of knowledge the phrase: "No, I'd hate it if something happened to it while I had it."

I’d buy a couple more and tell him you’re trying to decide which one sounds better, then send all three home with him.

You know the answer to that one!

But have some fun with it while you wrestle with your conscience.

Have you tried switching it off and on again?
