I have had a ‘76 Thinline with original WRHB pickups in it for about a year and a half on long term loan. It’s a stunning and amazing guitar. I love recording rhythm parts with it. Has an airy blooming quality to the sound. The problem I have is when I record leads with it I feel like the sustain is completely lacking. I don’t expect Les Paul sustain, but more than what I’m getting. Any thoughts, or is this typical?

I think in general it is airy and woody a bit. Similar to an ES335 etc. I'd look for the right pedal for the sustain part unless you can play quite loud.

    Old strings?

Are the pickups really close to the strings?

Adjust the pickups lower and put new strings on it. If that doesn’t work, get a boost pedal. If that doesn’t work, send it to me and I’ll take care of it.

If the rhythm parts seem fine and the lead parts aren't.

The string change and the pickup orientation should have an effect. Those changes could change the sound of your rhythm parts too. You'll have to consider that.

Maybe try a compressor when doing your leads before you make any other changes.

Try changes in increments. Too many changes all at once, you might not be able to identify what the problem was.

Hope you get it working for you.

I have a guitar that was plinky, and loosening and then resetting-up the relief solved it. It might be worth a shot.

Fresh strings, tune up, slack neck screws 1/2 turn, then tighten them back up.
If the tuning goes flat, you've just used string tension to draw the neck into the pocket and improved the neck/body connection.
Check that the bridge plate is flat/flush to the body.
    Lower the pickups.
    Raise the action a tad.

Thanks for all the tips guys! You don’t disappoint. Reminded me of the simple, strings are pretty old. I’ll start there. I messed with the pickups for a super long time to get the bloom from them. I can measure where they are at again, I don’t remember off the top of my head.

I’ve never really noticed different electric guitars set up properly sustaining for materially different durations.
