Problem-solving for an early '50s tweed build?

A question just popped into my head regarding the use of octal tubes, because I’m determined to use them in at least one build. If I take the 5D5 circuit, which I posted above, could I simply substitute the preamp tubes for octals? I’m thinking of using a pair of 6SC7 on the inputs and 6SL7 in...

15" Speaker recommendations for 5E3 build

My favourite speaker for a standard 5E3 is the Weber 12A100T, so I’d say that the 15A100A would be a great choice. I have a bit of a love affair with their smaller-magnet alnico speakers because they have a breath and articulation that I haven’t heard in any other speakers. It’s been a while...

Problem-solving for an early '50s tweed build?

Wow, I've never heard of a local tube before. I thought that was a typo at first!

Problem-solving for an early '50s tweed build?

Thanks, I didn't know that there are current Russian 6SC7 tubes, I thought they only made 6SL7. That's helpful.

Problem-solving for an early '50s tweed build?

Hi Everyone, I luckily scored a pair of full-sized chassis that can house octal Super/Pro tweed builds. I had a separate thread going that turned into a conversation about these potential builds, so I thought I'd start a new thread to keep things on-topic. These chassis are punched for octal...

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

I'm not sure what the difference does to the end result. I appreciate the replies, I think that I'm going to start a new thread for this, just to keep things on topic.

TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger & Pitch Modulator

Thank you! Does anyone use the “pitch modulator” setting for a vibrato effect? When I had a Retro Sonic chorus on my board (which just came off), I used the vibrato setting to play SRV’s Couldn’t Stand the Weather with my band and I liked the sound. Now I’m curious how the TC will fare doing...

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

I found this video comparing a 1953 6SC7 Super, a 1954 12AX7 Super and a 1959 narrow panel Super. It's pretty informative and educational, just wondering what your opinions are. However, this one has 12AX7s and it sounds great: Sorry to venture so far off topic, it's actually how the...

TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger & Pitch Modulator

No, but I can get his chorus sound, lol.

    What's your favorite Chorus Pedal?

After years with the Retro Sonic chorus, it’s coming off this weekend and being replaced by an original, vintage TC Electronic chorus. I used to have one ages ago, and I’m really looking forward to having this sound again. In the lush department, I always thought the Tortuga Martini was...

TC Electronic Stereo Chorus/Flanger & Pitch Modulator

I’ve been stripping down my pedalboard lately, trying to simplify it a little. I got a Whirlwind Orange Box Phaser a couple of weeks ago and I like it so much that I decided to upgrade my chorus. I was considering getting a Jam Waterfall, but then I noticed this beauty in the local ads, and I...

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

It is the correct size for those amps. Someone custom ordered a handful of these chassis from Mojotone a while ago and I think that these were just leftovers. If anything, I think that the possibility of custom, group orders from Mojotone by us here would be a cool idea once in a while.

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

I was able to get three of these chassis. One is for a friend so the other two are for my own builds. I'm thinking an early, octal Pro and a noval Super. The four inputs in the chassis aren't inline, but it doesn't really matter. I can easily fit the circuits in. Between the tone knob and the...

    5F6A - Build

That looks great, which 15" are you using again? Back in the old Traynor days, I had a Bass Master wired to 5F6A specs and I played it through a 1x15 cab for years. It sounded marvelous.

The World's Top Five Rock Bands are all British?

I can't disagree with Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. I had to learn Suspicious Minds for my band recently. My brother suggested we do the '73 Honolulu version, which we did, and I ended up spending a heck of a lot of time watching Elvis performances afterwards. I feel that...

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

Hmm... Maybe I should use 5751 tubes in place of the 6SC7; at least they have the same gain factor.

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

Yeah, perhaps 12AY7/12AX7 tubes all around would be safer. I just don't know if this would mess with the overall character of the build because I haven't played octal preamp tubes in decades! I've certainly never compared octal to noval side by side.

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

For me, one of the allures to the old Pro amps is that they are 6L6 amps without a TMB tone stack. Also, it would be cool to dabble with octal preamp tubes. Having a 30 watt amp has a somewhat similar topology to the tweed Deluxe seems really cool. I'm intrigued by the B, C and D versions of...

New Build Poll: 5D3 Deluxe or 1x12 6V6 tweed Bassman?

I'm coming back to this thread, because ever since this conversation began, I've had the itch to put together an older tweed. I just have one question though, because 6SC7 and 6SL7 tubes came up. I've read that 6SC7 can be microphonic, but that they might be worth trying because they sound...
