    New guitar day posts!

I like new whatever day posts. I like to hear what other people like about gear that I might not have tried, or maybe I'll learn a new way to see something that I have not liked in the past.

Harley Benton Dullahan FT24 with a couple of mods

N ish GD. So I've been a bit infatuated with headless ergo guitars recently. I did a sorta quick and dirty strandberg build a couple of months ago. That guitar is comfy to play on the couch, reclining in bed, standing, and sitting on the floor being mauled by cats. GASsing for another headless...

First build using my diy CNC.

Hitting the Start Job button can cause extremely anxiety! I've been procrastinating CNCing fret slots, fearing for the tiny delicate cutters. What RPM and feeds are you using for the slots?

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Thanks! It would have been much easier to build from scratch. My lady is threatening to steal this one so I might have to make another. This is definitely the most mods I've done on one guitar.

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

And it's done! I'm very happy with it. Super light at 4.6 lbs. Comfy to play on the couch, great balance, and sounds good. The pickups are a bit brighter than I expected so I may have to put a tone control on it sometime in the future. Tuning on this bridge is much easier than the original...

Fretted, sanded, and a couple coats of Odies Oil applied. Smells like soap.

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Little update. I made the pickup rings from thin birch ply glued to scraps from the maple top. Also made a control cavity plate. I didn't like the control plate as I'd does not flow with body shape. Control plate version 2. That's better but still not quite right. The aluminum is too thick...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

I got a bit delayed trying to figure out the tuners and the bridge. I was originally going to reuse the Batking tuners and saddles by making some sort of mounting plate that would let me use them without the tremolo part. There are possible solutions but I did not think of an elegant way to...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

The Shapeoko is decent, when used within it's limits. In hardwoods I usually do fast shallow cuts to keep the force down while still having a decent chipload on the cutter. The happy place for most harder woods is 3mm stepdown, 1500mm/min, 20krpm, 2 flute 6.35mm cutter. I'll cut the speed in...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Got a bit more done. I carved in the neck to body joint. More bad planning here, the pocket on the inside of the bass side body wing comes perilously close to the outside. To avoid making a hole I left that awkward lump poking out. It's comfy enough though. Also started reshaping the neck...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

I've decided to use a control plate to mount the switch and volume pot. The plate will be made with material from the top and hopefully will be fairly unobtrusive. I've still not decided on where the output jack should go. To get the target weight of less than 5lbs I did some chambering of the...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Glueing the top.. I was nervous about this part. I've tried fancy pants tops a couple of times before but I could never get the joint nice and tight. I gathered my apathy together so I would not be too disappointed when I end up with a wide glue line with gaps and bubbles. As I mentioned, I...

10 most discussed/hyped/talked-up amps in TDPRI history (and does anyone still use a Cube 60 ?)

I loved my cube 60. Mine was an older one without modeling. It kept up with by band mates triple rec in a practice space. He got a better workout moving his gear though. That little Roland was the biggest sounding small amp I've heard. The cube 60 got traded for a Valve Jr and cab after I...

Why do cheap pickups sound bad?

Why do cheap pickups sound bad?

IMO, different does not always mean bad. Sure, there are bad sounding pickups, amps, speakers, etc.., I think that most modern guitar components are pretty ok. I was on the Floyd Rose site. They were simultaneously claiming that light Ti saddles improve tone, heavy brass blocks improve tone...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Pickups are on the way. After being wishy washy for a while I landed on a set of Artec medium output humbuckers, their VH-rock set. Since this is a quick and dirty build I'm using cheap and dirty pickups. I've had good luck with Artec before, their P90 is wonderful. I don't like the look of...

Better as a canoe paddle than a travel guitar. Not a good travel canoe paddle now that I think about it.

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Thanks! About the tuners. They are great junk. 13:1 gear ratio and the tuner spinning opposite of what you would expect make tuning kinda hard. That they take the plain end of the string and the solid stability make then great.

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Decisions to make. I was planning to use a single low output humbucker at the neck, but now I'm thinking I'll go with my favorite combo, a bridge humbucker and a neck p90. Because of the carving, there is not much space for a control cavity. I'm thinking about a)volume and blend, b)volume...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

Got a little more done today. Released the body wings from their plank prison then trim routed the ledge flush. After not using the router table for a while I was concerned but it was fine. There was a small battle getting the sides straight and square. Because I was lazy and didn't plug...

Fill in pickup hole, taper the plug, then level the surface. I plan to top this with an acoustic back so I need 3mm clearance for that. Let me know if you get tired of cnc pictures. My shop is tiny (6x12ft) so the cnc router is the Swiss army knife. Pull the guitar outa the machine, bandsaw...

Travel guitar mods, or the taming of the BatKing

So me being me, I bought a dumb guitar online. The Batking. It's kinda fun but rough around the edges and nearly impossible to hold. The pickup is great if I wanna play Pantera and nothing else. Observe I recently played a Strandberg at a local shop and loved the feel of it. Hated the...

Cheap guitars are getting scary good

I've had mixed luck with recent cheap-ish guitars in the last couple of years. Best one is the $179 at the time Grote es125 jazzbox. Great neck and fretwork, good pickup and tuners, sound excellent. I pick it up everything I warm up the amp. No mods needed but I replaced the bridge for looks...
