    What's on your workbench today?

Grip the end of the producing jack with long nose pliers and a thin spanner on the nut or small long noses? Or some woven tape on circlip pliers inside the jack as they squeeze out rather than like conventional grips ;)

    Long overdue hello

Hey guys n girls, Been away for sometime now and just popping in to say hi and try and have a mooch about to see what I’ve been missing. Life’s been hectic so I’ve built nothing since university :( , but I did walk away from that with a first class honours Bsc degree in musical instruments...

    Maple Acoustic Build

Top job dude! Think I may start a maple one in the near future after seeing that beauty you created.

Pretty pictures (well I took them so pretty for me)

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments guys. I'm afraid there isn't a build thread for this one but it was done the same as the J45 I did a thread on last year. The neck on the strat was just tinted prior to a coat of Nitro. I'll try and get a sound clip up at some point but up t my eyeballs in...

Pretty pictures (well I took them so pretty for me)

Got some beauty shots of the acoustic I've just finished building and the 77 strat I restored done today, keep your trousers on! Not the best images as I'm no camera pro but here you go.

    Finally making something worth sharing

I think it looks great. Really like the burst, did you use any sealer prior to staining or just go onto bare wood?

    Thought I'd share my 77 Strat's story

Thanks for all the comments guys. I decided on the sonic blue for exactly the reasons Wade stated, that and I never liked the burst fender did on these. Your version of a burst looks fantastic though Wade.

    Thought I'd share my 77 Strat's story

So what have I been up to while away from this place? Well one of the tasks I had was a project of restoration for my first “real” guitar. A 1976/7 Hardtail Fender Stratocaster. I got this guitar when I was 17 (1988-ish) for a bargain price of 150 GBP. It was covered in white emulsion...

    What's on your workbench today?

I was doing some research on rosewood for a class last year and happened to come across "Brazilian Kingwood". The images I saw were stunning, so on my next trip to my supplier I enquired if he had any. Bingo! He had a 1.5 Metre board he'd had stashed for years in case any furniture makers...

    barbrainy's goodbye

My sincerest condolences to Andy's family & friends. I've been away for some time and deeply saddened to read this upon my return. This place, and many others I imagine, will not be the same without his presence. R.I.P brainy

Satriani's going to sign my guitar...advice?

As Tony said above. I had Slash sign my LP sig version of his guitar with a sharpie and it rubbed off in no time at all. Like you I investigated the options to protect it and the best choice was cover it with a clear sticky back sheet in the shape you like. Wish I'd of done it but there you go...

    What's on your workbench today?

That's very kind of you to say mate. That particular one was built for my uncle so no selling etc, just a one off. When asked if he wanted it to have a fender logo he said he did not mind, he expected my logo but was happy with either so I just did both. I gotta say I'm pretty happy with it, the...

    What's on your workbench today?

Been mega busy lately but managed to finish a strat at last with 2 others in the wings and a fourth thats a mexican just in for a refinish. Completed one is english walnut body and neck with a Kingwood FB Sutle logo on the headstock rear with my name Made it look kinda real from the...

Ridgid type sander found in UK.

Mines all good. Bobbin belt change is simple and quick. Only thing to allow for is holding it down as it shakes a bit freestanding which isn't surprising. Not had much chance to use it yet but very happy with the results so far.

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

As shown on the previous page  if you mean the strats that was cnc for the bodies which come out rather rough and require loads of cleanup. Speaking of the strats, I got all the final sanding done on 2 necks ready for fretting then the paint shop. Put the frets in the maple one and...

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

Thanks Reb, though this will be the back unless I make a LH version by mistake  Thanks Lisa. Wanted to try this for awhile. I "kinda" agree with you. I have zero experience in carving, & no real tools for it so decided to try this approach as it still involves shaping from which my...

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

Small update as I've been busy with other stuff. Topography now completed on the router sled Next I've started to blend the levels Its getting there slowly  I hope to have most of the strat stuff (3 builds on the go) out of the way soon so I can concentrate on...

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

I agree, this should be epic! though its unknown if it will be an epic fail or success yet  You and me both I have the Benedetto plans as well and can tell you that they are well worth the money. Intricate is about right mate. The binding alone, due to the guitars 17" width and...

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

I have the finger planes but will probably start drilling out the inside to almost final thickness before using them after some serious gouge work  I'm not looking forwards to sharpening the blades though as they are curved sole planes, maybe investing in the veritas camber guide for...

    Gibson L-5 CES Archtop Build

Been awhile but its always busy at the start of year at uni. Had a set back with the maple wedges. I wasn't happy with the join I did as it wasn't sitting flat after the summer so I rejoined it after making an elaborate jig to put the wedges through a sander to flatten the back faces...

    What's on your workbench today?

I've had a cool week being given an induction for our university wood mill this week. Best part about it using various machines to help make a guitar to walk away with at the end. A walnut Strat body done on a cnc, to be finished by hand. Also one piece necks with most of the work done using...
