Mojotron's Former 2015 TDPRI GSM Challenge: A '61 SG Build and other assorted tales

I've had a '61 SG build at the top of my build list for a while now. They are unique with their devilishly understated asymmetry, neck heavy tendencies as well as about as mid-heavy tone as there is out there. I got a reissued '61 Standard to study SGs last fall and returned it due to the neck...

Psyched for the 2013 Challenge thread

Man, I've gone from interested to completely psyched in the last few days! I can hardly wait - I've not been this inspired since the 2011 Challenge. Anyone else got this disease? All that I really need now is to sharper some bits and rework a template or 2 and I'm off.

    Mojotron's LP Thread

Well, the Les Paul fever has spread.... In the last few months I have been pouring over all of the LP plans and details in Gil's, Jame's and a few other LP threads and got excited. I'll talk about details, motivations, possible finishes and design later in the thread. For now, I'm just...

Notes and observations on my pickup winding experiences...

Maybe I will do a step by step description of how to build of a pickup, but there are so many great one's out there - I thought I might just talk about my mistakes, recoveries and observations as I really just started winding and have run into - and resolved - several issues. Since the end of...

    Mojotron's 2012 Challenge Build Thread -- COMPLETED

Due the shortage of misguided financial endeavors, baseless opinion, unrestrained lethargy and self deprecation in the world - plus my inability to pass a router without picking it up - I'm IN! I know I did not finish on time last year... And, I said I was going to keep it simple this year...

What hasn't been done here on tdpri?

I have a few a few ideas I'm working on: A CF covered/reinforced neck made from really light wood - Nick's made a few hollow ones I've seen. Making a CF fretboard - Parker does theirs without using fret tangs - seems like a few interesting things to work out there. A method to...

    Mojotron's FORMER Build Challenge Thread

This will be interesting - lets see what happens. It looks like I will be making a guitar for myself so I have a couple of things I would like to do with this build. 1) Versatility - I like to play all kinds of music, so I want to make something that has a good jazz tone with the neck...

Opinions on the effect of the neck pocket angle on playability

I have had a variety of guitars through the years and now I make most of my own from scratch. I've been playing with the idea of making a Tele with a neck pocket angle so that it would be easier to use a different kind of bridge, but when I play guitars - like Gibsons - that have a slight...

    mini-humbucker build info

Anyone have info on how a mini-humbucker is constructed? I'm wondering if it's just like a PAF, except with thinner bobbins and the same magnet and base/cover material? I'm wondering if someone might have bobbin info so I might make some prototype bobbins out of soft maple... Also...

Aerosol amber dye or stain over shellac from HD or Lowes?

I'm looking for an aerosol dye or stain that I can spray over shellac. I love ReRanch and others that I have tried, but I don't want to pay through the nose and then pay shipping on top of that. Does anyone know if there is a commonly found (like at a HD or Lowes) stain or dye that does a...

    Alternate nut materials

I'm practicing making nuts and was looking at UHMW plastic. That stuff is relatively cheap, hard and super slick - I don't think it could bind. Anyone use UHMW plastic for a nut - I think it must be much harder than Nylon 6? Any other ideas on cheap, readily available nut material to...

    Table Saw buying advice

I'm looking for a new table saw in the $700 range +/-$100. I really wanted to get a contractor saw like a Ridgid TS3650 or TS3660, but since there all of the Ridgid stationary table saws seemed to have become discontinued I'm back out searching for a good saw - primarily for woodworking -...

Allergy precautions when working with some woods

I have had very few problems with allergic reactions - though I have noticed kind of a tightness in my throat once or twice when working with D-Fir and Poplar at the same time. In the last year I did a bunch of work with Western Red Cedar (known to cause some people problems) as well as many...

Making molds for casting parts in epoxy

I really like Earvana nuts (the way I use then they are flush with the fretboard) as well as some kinds of knobs. I wondering if there is an easy way that someone has found to make a mold of something like an Earvana nut or knobs so that you could make castings in hard epoxy? I can't...

Anyone make their own bridge? Here's what I did...

This was a project I did a while ago - and always wondered if perhaps others had some thoughts on the best ways to make your own bridge. So - I'll post my approach and see if others have some thoughts. I looked at my tele bridge and thought that I could make my own. Since I'm going to be...

    Skunk Stripe Shaping

I'm wondering how everyone else is shaping the ends of their skunk stripes? I've tried to just free hand it with some sand paper and did not get the best results. I've thought of doing something like drilling a 9/64ths or 5/32nd hole in a board and then cutting that right down the center...

Tools for working with stainless steel frets

I would like to start using stainless steel frets, but I have read that the usual tools will wear out fast and I'm wondering what kind of tools to get? Anyone have a few tips on this? Especially a crowning file - perhaps the sandpaper and a Fret Dressing Stick would work best for SS frets...

Drilling tuner holes on a DIY neck

I've been drilling tuner holes in my neck templates by doing the following: 1) print out a good headstock template to scale 2) use spray adhesive to apply it to the headstock - aligned carefully so that it's really close to straight 3) put the bit of choice in my drill press 4) for the 2...

    Best filler for MDF templates

Perhaps this is not everyone's problem, but I find myself making copies of my master templates and then using/abusing copies - using the master to fix the copy when I need to fix a spot. Generally the way I do this is to put wood filler on the MDF template - then re-rout that section of the...

Anyone try a one piece mahogany neck?

Anyone try a one piece mahogany neck? I think mahogany is thought to be too soft for a fretboard, but with jumbo frets I would not think that would be an issue if the fret tang would be stable - but perhaps there is more to it than that.
