Lets build something that looks like an L5 archtop

That guitar is really a beautiful creation, and your work is meticulous and flawless. Thank you for the great build thread, Freeman.

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I think I will remove them and reduce the shanks a bit, and cut string grooves with a Kraus bur on the Foredom, and lube with graphite (pencil lead). That should reduce the side friction and allow them to slide better. OR - I could just remake them and chase the new ones around my shop - that...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I decided over the weekend that the single string tree was OK for E/B, but needed to make another for G/D. That darned stabilized dyed black maple would not cooperate, so I made 2 more out of phenolic. That stuff is tough to shape on the lathe. And of course, parted it off, and ZING - off...

New build - carved top Tele

WHAT - No Screw ups? How dare you. By this point, I would have to figure at least 4 major repairs to make it even close to presentable. Good Job.

    What's on your workbench today?

My Fender Cyber-Twin V1 has encoders, and after the amp sat in storage for too many years they were like playing roulette. I never knew where they'd stop. I took the amp apart (very scary with so many pcb boards) and sprayed De-Oxit on the disassembled encoders and put back together, and it...

One man's trash is another man's trashy Dolphin Nose bass

I just caught up on this thread. Pretty cool, Marty. It should be a fun bass to play. Did you make the lipstick pickup?

Shaping the neck: neck depth control

My most recent build, TeleBaum, the day before the last day of the build I compared the finished neck to a tele I really like. The new one was 1/4" too thick (not much I could do about the width), so I started to file away with a SurForm rasp, and got it very close. Then moved to ROS, and then...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

Thanks, Master - I learned a lot, took a long time to complete, 'cause life gets in the way. Already started the next one or two or three (AcousteleBaum, and another couple of LP's). Maybe by February I'll be posting regularly on those threads. I have a bunch of wood to turn into urns, bowls...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

Headstock with black dyed and stabilized maple string tree. & Beauty shots. A Co-worker gave me a brand new ashtray cover, and it fits and looks good. But probably like everyone else, it just seems to get in the way. I guess I'll have to start smoking again. And another co-worker looked at...

Starting Les Paul Style guitar build.

Scott - with a laminated neck like that you won't have to even consider a scarf jointed neck. Mine for Scrap Paul is Mahogany/Flamed Maple/Mahogany, and when I was trying to spray nitro the whole guitar fell headstock first onto concrete garage floor and bounced. Lessons were learned - don't...

OH NO - AcousteleBaum - Gonna do it.

I will be referring to your build as a guiding light, although I've been known to stray off the path many ways and many times.

OH NO - AcousteleBaum - Gonna do it.

Since TeleBaum is playable, now to get back to the AcousteleBaum. I've done a lot of engraving, jewelry making, and woodturning since this thread started, so it needs to get built. Fair is Fair. .

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I spent time yesterday and today getting the action and intonation all set up; file the nut slots down, lowered the saddles, and applied my decal. I went to GC and asked the tech there about the volume pot and he showed me the standard tele wiring diagram, which I obviously had not complied...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I got it all assemble down to the strap buttons and magnets on the controls cover, and intonated pretty close, and plugged it into a little practice amp. It works sort of as planned, I can tweek it to make it better (except the Master Volume does nothing). Robt57 suggested making bone string...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

All bolted together, and one string on. First time I've used these old school slotted tuners with the hole down the center. I don't like them. Some major issues to think over. Because I trimmed the headstock too thin, and added the poplar to the back, not the drop off from the nu to the pegs...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I think I have the wiring ready to drop into the cavity. The voltages all check out thru the 5-way switch as to what the pickups read prior to connecting. Even the coil split toggle kills a coil. Proof is in the pudding.

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

Clock is tick tockin' away. I woke up and thought now's as good a time as I'll have to re-shape that neck (got it more like the Squiers I own in thickness, and put a new shine on it - 7 coats of FP, and 3 coats of Behlen's Nitro gloss. Smoof. Started trying to figure our the wiring, and I...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

    1) Mount the tuners; DONE - CHECK 2) Remove the bridge and fish a ground wire into control cavity; 3) Mount the compensated saddles; 4) Mount the neck and set up string spacing. - didn't mount the neck yet, but set up nut slot spacing. 5) Cut the string grooves on the bone nut. - DONE - CHECK I...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

    1) Tuners mounted - CHECK I also was curious how closely I match my Squier Tele's neck - this one is 0.030 wider, and about 0.030" thicker at the 1st, 7th and 12th frets respectively. What's a 32nd inch amongst friend?

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

    1) Bone nut, installed and arc is marked for lowest string height. 2) Fret marked and leveled and crowned. 3) Tuner ferrules installed ( had to glue them in with epoxy because the drilled holes were too large - another oops). 4) Fret board French Polished a few more times, to make it pretty...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

Whew!! - I made a custom bone nut for the neck, after I made sure the neck fret board was flat (not), so I torqued the truss rod to make it be flat. The I checked the frets to be level, and they are. I will next do a very light fret levelling with fine sandpaper on a the HF floor level (which...

My First Build - Let The Chips FLY

I started on the strat pickup ring last night, and finished it this morning. I think it's looking alright.
