Tom Petersson of Cheap Trick playing a 1961 Fireglo Rickenbacker 4000 bass

I used to wonder if the 8-string basses Rick was making in the early 90s were aimed straight at Petersson.

$150 a lot of money to ship a used Fender '68 Princeton Reverb domestically.

Well, I’ve always assumed that was how people got out of shipping.

    Zippo! Who still has one?

I have more than a few, though many are unused, (gifts, sentimental, etc) and suffered the same problem as many other folks--even if I only smoked 8 cigs since the last fill, they're still dry before I know what happened. I used to collect the Camel cig Zippos (though they eventually became...

Anyone know how to reach Bruce Zinky these days?

I know of a capable amp tech in southeastern PA, near West Chester if you're in the need, but no idea where Bruce is these days.

    1964 Deluxe (non-reverb) barn find

The entire time I was perusing this thread I was trying to come up with the perfect 'buzzing sound' joke. Loos like a cool project, good luck!

Best Tube Head for Guitar AND Bass

If you’re looking to craft dirty bass tones from your amp, the guitar amp sounds like the way to go. If you’re using a pedalboard, bass amps are better designed for clean headroom. V4 (+/-B) are available for around $1000 used in this area…if you can live with used. As a bass player, I like...

Best Tube Head for Guitar AND Bass

If you're only planning to record, any amp will suffice, but to play live music with a full band, 100 watts would be a minimum. And any amp engineered to generate distortion for guitars will probably make a bad-sounding bass amp, and vice versa. If you're planning to derive all of your 'dirt'...

Fender Blues Jr advice for beginner

Understand one more thing--if you're playing indoors with neighbors to contend with, a BJr, any version, is going to be LOUD by the time you really get the tubes cooking. Shoot, I have a 5-watt Epiphone Valve Jr combo with an 8" speaker that can rattle windows long before I max it out. Beyond...

    Curiously Modded Fender Excelsior

I also tried a pair of matched vintage 6K6GTs and they were just as loud and also very easily overdriven, so they didn't help much in that regard. I still had the original stock speaker in it then, as well.

    Curiously Modded Fender Excelsior

I tube rolled a lot when I first got my Exy, and did find that the RCA 6V6GT sounded great…lots of headroom and punch, contrasted to a loosely-matched pair of NOS KenRads that got really dirty really fast (think Neil Young cranked 5E3), but in a cool way. I’ve never checked, but I got the...

    Curiously Modded Fender Excelsior

For what it's worth, I also put a vintage P15 and a full complement of vintage American tubes (notably, a 12AY7 in V1) and it is fantastic sounding with no other mods.

    "lunchbox" amp options

I doubt highly I could convince the CFO to spend much more than $500 on it, a toy for a bass player, but there might be some wiggle room. I’m also willing to consider a kit.

    "lunchbox" amp options

Very comprehensive, northernguitar, thank you. I like the idea of the Traynor, though they’re pretty thin on the ground here in the US mid-Atlantic area. tce63, which Laney? The Lionheart series got stellar reviews when they came out, and there are both 5 and 20 watt versions that appeal, but...

    "lunchbox" amp options

Forgot about the Dark Horse, thanks for the reminder. not SUUUUURE I want a 6V6GT amp, but I have a few EL84 amps already. Only 6V6 amp I have is an Excelsior. Those are just the amps I could think of, but yeah, lots of 84s in that list. Keep ‘em comin’!

    Comparing older Mesa combos

My bandmate/best bud had a Nomad that was parked here for rehearsal purposes and I loved playing it. Dual EL34 (6L6GC option) 1x12 with 3 discrete preamps, all footswitch selectable. Gain increased in each channel. Was set up clean-raunchy-AC/DC. I liked to play it when he wasn't around, though...

    "lunchbox" amp options

So, I got a nice, small 2x8 speaker cab recently, and I'm interested in getting an interesting head for it. I do have an Epiphone Valve Jr that's fine, just curious about options. So, I'm trying to get an idea of the options available to me...I'm interested in tube, fairly simple tone stack...

What amp for a Les Paul ??

I’m partial to the 18watt variations with the LP…the “TMB” variation is most useful. Speaker choice is key, as a pair of EL84s can still crank with a really efficient speaker.

    Bald Eagle

We live about 20 minutes from Conowingo, I take the kids down there to kill time and get some nature all the time. There were several of them on site last weekend when I took them down, but we don’t have the lens power to get that close. We vacationed in Alaska last year and my munchkin is...

I want a 3x10 tweed Bandmaster... anyone have opinions?

Speaker choice is important. Most of the newer Eminence patriot/redcoat series 10" speakers are @ 100dB, while P10Rs are around 95dB...the Eminence speakers will be considerably louder, but may have a different tone.

What was the best/most significant album released in the 1980's?

I gotta disagree about Thriller. It's a fantastic album with great music and sales most people would envy, but it doesn't really feel like 80s music to me. I hate to use the word, but it's a bit more timeless. Same argument probably applies to Born in the USA. So many of the songs and bands...

Which STRAT would you get and why?

Well, I find that the strat trem, or more precisely the springs, are essential to the strat sound, so slap 5 springs in there, tighten them up to the front of the cavity and find a little block of wood to wedge in there and run with it.

Something that even Keef would snort at?

I noticed the 6-year-old nature of the listing. I also noticed that the seller has 4 other listings, and the cheapest guitar he's selling goes for about 3x his Steinway grand piano. This album came out in 1988, so that's probably what his fingers looked like then. I also think it looks pretty...
