As Jim said, cherrywood is nice to work with. Slightly softer than maple. Router bit burns, if not new/sharp, or stop a one spot too long. Left, DIY HH Cherrycaster Strat, one piece body & neck. Slight burst on body, neck natural. Right, surplus body I refinished black, DIY cherrywood neck...

    What's on your workbench today?

Couldn’t get to the bench. Another 10”/25cm of snow this morning till now. Still coming lightly. Went out on the tractor & dunked it out enough, so the Mrs. could get to work in the morning. Going through Thunder Bay now. I’m the top-left red bubble. Dryden. Scott

Starting Les Paul Style guitar build.

Yes, there is enough there to make the neck a one piece, and glue wings on the headstock. I’m not going for the Gibson 17deg tilt-back angle. If I use what is there, it’ll work out to adjust over 10deg angle. Hence, the title “Les Paul Style”. I’ll be modifying things to my liking as the build...

    What's on your workbench today?

Needed a 16” radius fret caul for my youngest son’s neck build. Only had a 7.25”, 9.5” & 12”. Went to the shop & made one. I had some 3/16” brass scrap around. Roughed it out on my DIY 2” knife belt sander. Then taped some 80gt emery to the neck to sand to the radius. Got it nice...

    What's on your workbench today?

Helped my youngest son build & install some custom markers in the neck he is building. Flamed maple/walnut/maple/walnut/flamed maple laminate, with ebony fingerboard. Markers made from 1/4” stainless tube, with I made a mosaic on the 12th, out of 1/16” stainless rod pieces inside the...

    What's on your workbench today?

Glued up a laminated neck blank for my next build. An LP style guitar. The plan is a Mahagony body, with birdseye maple cap. Mahogany/walnut/birdseye maple/walnut/mahogany. Cherrywood on outside was just a clamping block. Trim the excess laminates off tomorrow. I’ll glue wings...

Western Cedar, wenge neck, Jazzmaster - Brotherhood Build

Well, Sprayed some colour. Not sure how I like it. I used the 6oz, & not enough to even things out. Might end up going for a solid colour. The first coat ran slightly in one spot. I guess I put it on slightly too heavy. Seemed like nothing was going on. Might just go find...

Western Cedar, wenge neck, Jazzmaster - Brotherhood Build

No. And at the moment, running wood heat in the house, & low humidity in the winter, the wood should never shrink any more. Less than 40% humidity in the house, with the body & neck hanging a few feet from the wood stove. Scott

Mixed up some more colour for the nitro lacquer. What I had previously, wasn’t enough to tint properly. Strained through t-shirt about 3 times & coffee filter. I ended up with 6oz of tinted lacquer. Hopefully that should be enough for body & headstock. Might try & spray...
