Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Links were helpful, thanks! Does Edcor really want $21 to ship it UPS ground!? Man, that's practically 1/2 the cost of the tranny! NE is not the dark side side of the moon. Nice lookin' stuff tho'.

Thanks Commodore 64! that is the kind of similar experience I was looking for. I see a new power transformer in my future.

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

I replaced the resistor and got some new tung-sol tubes but unfortunately this did not cure duckie. I am going to take the chassis out and give it a good visual and electrical inspection to make sure everything is on the up and up. I will post voltages and findings. I have a sneaking...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Thanks robrob, I will double check that. Was not able to get to it over the weekend. I remember an issue with the heater tap not being grounded and learning about the 100 Ohm y wired to ground trick to eliminate it. The stuff you find here can save time time time. So many newb builders such as...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Compared the voltages coming off the power transformer of the deluxe with those of the champ. I first removed the rectifier. The champ is steady 480V at pin 5 and 6, while the deluxe is all over the place but never more than 65+/- V. It's crazy, numbers never stay quiet, just keep flipping...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Thanks c64 I will get a shot up, the amp has been perfect for 2 years and gets used almost everyday. So I don't believe it is a wiring issue. This is the first time I have opened the back on it in I can't remember how long. So I don't think it is a wiring issue. But more eyes the better. I have...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Swapped out rectifier tubes, the one from the deluxe worked in the champ, and the one from the champ shoots sparks when power is applied in the deluxe. Guessing either a short or a bad power transformer. I will go over the connections with the multimeter, but the amp does not move often and I...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

Hey ripgtr thanks for the comment, it's a sovtek, new guy. So we have a fireworks show in the rectifier bottle. Pretty sure that's not the operating norm, going to try my other rectifier tube and if that proves to be the issue replace rectifiers in both the 5f1and 5e3 with NOS tubes.

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

I think the toasted resistor was a symptom as opposed to the problem. I replaced it and switched power on and put it on standby, no smoke, switched it off of standby and the rectifier sizzled a bit and then the fuse blew. I suspect the rectifier tube is done, I checked for shorts and did not...

Duckie is Quiet, 5e3 squealed a bit and then went silent

In 2012 I built a DIY 5e3 from sourced parts and the help and encouragement of people here at this wonderful forum, you can see it here: http://www.tdpri.com/forum/shock-brothers-diy-amps/313314-duckie-another-5e3-tweed-deluxe-born.html#post3929359 Last night right before a practice it...

Anybody know the truss rod length for a mustang bass?

Thanks 2blue2, good solution. I will check out the build, and post picks of my slow progression. I am thinking about making the bass 1 3/4 inches thick. Just because the alder I have hanging around is that dimension, pros and cons? Besides simply more weight ;) In the mean time here's a...

Anybody know the truss rod length for a mustang bass?

Anybody know the truss rod length for a mustang bass? Or know where I can get a dual action rod specifically for a 30 inch scale bass? I have begun building a mustang Bass, 30 inch scale. This will be my my first neck build. I have completed my master and build templates for the neck. I...

    Should i learn soldering?

Certainly, who wouldn't want to a useful new skill? Llots of good tutorials on the net and probably right here on Tdpri. At a minimum I've done some simple repairs for friends and myself that have saved time and money. Well worth the investment in a soldering iron and time learning how to do...

Rats! Dented curing body. Options for repair?

Like you said it's worth a shot. I have some lacquer laying around I'll drop it on. I was surprised it was so brittle almost 5 days in. The knobs that got dropped are Mustang style knobs, not like tele domed or barrel knobs with a lot of mass. Thanks for the reply.

Rats! Dented curing body. Options for repair?

So after some research I understand what a drop fill is. It looks like the color layer has been compromised at both spots. I can see some primer on the slice and it looks like the dent cracked the color. Wish I had those 10 seconds back,

Rats! Dented curing body. Options for repair?

Thanks michael0703 Rookie finisher, this is the second one. Can you give more detail on drop fill? The dent still has color, the slice is lifiting a bit. Pics soon, I promise! Pics attached, hard to get good shots. I've often said the mark of someone who knows their stuff is not only...

I bought one from the local music shop 'cause I loved the color, and it really is a comfortable playing great sounding guitar. And as nice as Teles sound through a 5e3 that mexi start really wakes up through it. Hope it is still there on Monday and feels the same.

A New Pickup Winder Scratch Build!

great Idea, I've never been happy with my attempts. Truing the faceplate that the bobbin mounts to has been my nemesis. Looking forward to your solution. Keep it going! Thought on more space in the box...and old tower PC chassis? May be too flexible, but you never know.
