truly shocking hand painted strat on reverb

I'm sure whomever put the finish on that guitar is probably a nice guy and I commend him on trying to do something unique and different, I honestly do. I also understand everyone has different tastes and there are really no "right" and "wrong" opinions on what is good or bad because its all...

So whats your "your recipe" for creating an authentic shade of neck amber?

Hey guys, QUESTION- What would you guys suggest as far as a simple and authentic looking recipe for "neck amber" when using an HVLP spray rig? Please let me know whats working for you as far as specific colors used and what ratios you use (i.e. amount of stain/dye and amount of clear lacquer)...

Mixing Tints in Nitro (question about the tint solution)

Nice work NavyCoffeeDrinker. Looks good to me as well. The quality of that headstock decal you showed earlier in this thread looks really good. Would you mind sharing where you got it from? I'd like to get some. Thanks and keep up the nice work. Please post more pics when you can.

Recommendations for spray rig lacquer and retarder/thinner. What are you using?

One place I forgot to mention... For most of the original Fender and Gibson colors and just about everything else you could need as far as lacquer or supplies, I have a great source that it seems a lot of guys still don't know about yet. I've spoken about them here before, but for any of you...

Recommendations for spray rig lacquer and retarder/thinner. What are you using?

Instead of quoting a whole bunch of posts, let me just thank all of you guys who have posted with your advice and suggestions here so far. I really appreciate it. I'm still checking out several things that have been mentioned, but I think I'm going to grab some Behlens (Mohawk) instrument...

Recommendations for spray rig lacquer and retarder/thinner. What are you using?

Thanks very much for the recommendations so far. I will check out everything mentioned for sure. I remembered that I have a quart of Minwax gloss lacquer that is unopened. Its exactly the same stuff as whats in the red and black aerosol cans I've used. Just to get started with something and...

Recommendations for spray rig lacquer and retarder/thinner. What are you using?

Just bought a new Fuji HVLP spray rig and switching over from using rattle cans for way too long. I'm looking for a new clear nitro gloss lacquer and (importantly) a good retarder/thinner to help my clear coats avoid blush and be as smooth as possible with little, to no orange peel if applied...

Recommendations for a hi-build sanding sealer?

Thanks brother. I have a Sherwin Williams industrial store near me. I'm calling them tomorrow.

Recommendations for a hi-build sanding sealer?

Thanks. I've been using Deft sanding sealer in the aerosol cans for a long time and find it lacking somewhat. I just bought a Fuji sprayer and want to start using a hi build sanding sealer with a higher solid content. A few guys over at Reranch say they use "Aqua Coat X-119 Hi-Build Sanding...

Recommendations for a hi-build sanding sealer?

Title pretty much says it all. I've been using Deft lacquer sanding sealer, but I want to switch over to a hi-build sanding sealer with more solids in it. Something that fills defects easier and builds up quicker. For you guys using hi-build sanding sealer, what do you recommend? Thanks!

    Where to get this color?

Just an update. First- thanks, I appreciate everyones input. Oxford Supply in Windsor, Ontario Canada matched the color to some pictures I sent them and made me up a few aerosol cans of the Sage Green Metallic that I posted earlier in this thread (In genuine lacquer and at a very reasonable...

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

I generally wet sand as little as only a few days after finishing the final clear coats and have never really had any issues with it. I relic most of the stuff I do and I've found the longer you wait to do the aging, the more difficult it becomes to remove the paint in the areas you are...

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

Thanks guys. I appreciate the input. Waiting it out for weeks or months is not an option. I'd actually prefer to just strip and refinish if that turns out to be the case. I'm gonna give it through this Thanksgiving weekend and into next week. If I see no progress by then, I'm gonna try some...

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

No, they were 3 light misted passes per coat of the Watco. I definitely didn't spray it too heavy. Temp and humidity according to the hygrometer in my paint booth were around 68 degrees and 48-52% humidity give or take. Pretty ideal conditions. I will NEVER mix any brands of clear ever again...

Deft? Did you mean Watco instead?

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

Thanks for the tip. I'll keep that in mind. Would my "lightly misting with blush remover" idea be an ill-advised endeavour? or help accelarate drying at all?

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

Can you even wetsand something that is still very slightly tacky or is this a recipe for guaranteed disaster? I assume it probably is.

I mixed different brands of lacquer (yep...I did it) - need advice

This might be one for the "Shouldn't have done that" file. Hoping some of you more experienced guys here can guide me with some input... I was finishing the final clear coating of a neck and body with Minwax gloss spray lacquer (in the red and black can) from Lowes. I normally use Minwax clear...

    Where to get this color?

Chillman- Thanks. I had thought of this initially. I used to work for Sherwin Williams amd may still be able to purchase their LOVOC lacquer at a discount from a location near me. I'm about to switch over to spraying all my finishes using an Earlex HVLP turbine system and hopefully get away...

    Where to get this color?

Thanks. I appreciate it. I'm familiar with this product, but this is a base and 2K clear coat system. As far as I know (and was told by several auto supply outfits) its not an acrylic lacquer and cant be finished in clear nitrocellulose without the concern of compatibility issues. Earlier in...

    Where to get this color?

Not that I know of, but I could maybe find a very close replacement that does. Could you please explain to soemone not knowledgeable about auto paints what the significance of a pantone number is and what it would allow me to do as far as getting it filled in an aerosol that is compatible with a...

    Where to get this color?

Thanks guys. I appreciate all the input very much. I freely admit to loving classic mid-century automobiles (or really anything mid-century for that matter), but I certainly know very little about automotive paint. Basically, if I can't top it in lacquer, I'm just not going to use it as a base...

    Where to get this color?

“base coat” is a pretty broad term and doesn’t specifically describe what the product is made of. Every auto place I spoke with without exception stated that they didn’t offer a base coat product in lacquer and that what they did offer couldn’t be top coated with lacquer of any kind. what kind...
