    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Very interesting way to break speakers in. I think I will just play mine in and see what happens. From what I have heard the Jensens sound good to me. I am happy with the C12n reissues in my early 70s twin reverb so happy to give Jensen another go. Hi Ricky, I was so close to getting a Weber...

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Thanks 2L man, I ended up getting a new reissue P12r. If it doesn't work for me I will check out the other speakers you mentioned. What were the videos you mentioned? I have an old Celestion G12-50 that might work well?? I look forward to reporting back to you all with the results after the amp...

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Anyhow, a 2 month update is in call. I have been heavily poring over forum posts regarding this and that. Choosing parts, reading datasheets etc etc Learning, learning. Another shipment came in with the last pieces I need to complete the circuit board - so I will give myself a whippin' and get...

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

G'day Mic, thanks for that great tip - I will keep a keen eye out! Evatco have been great. A couple of months ago I ordered my first batch of parts from them. I get a call the next day asking whether I meant to choose the screw in bulb, as I had ordered the bayonet lamp holder. Fantastic...

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Howdy again, I am still getting everything together but will be starting soon. My dad is building the cabinet for me, and I've been looking into speakers. At this stage I am thinking a Jensen P12R reissue or a Weber Alnico Sig 12 with a smooth cone - leaning towards the latter. I can get either...

    Ohmite Little Demon

That makes sense to me dan40. Interesting to read how Victoria amps apparently got Allen Bradley to make custom resistors for them. Also read Bob Dylan bought a number of them to use. He likes things sounding old school, and would have certainly tried all the new Fender tweed reissues - so it...

    Ohmite Little Demon

That's a very good point. I checked out the data sheets and made this little table. The big jumps on my 5E3 eyelet board is about 6mm. The TE CBT50's total length is roughly 69.5mm, the Ohmite little demon's is 67.9mm. They just make it through but don't leave a lot to bend it under...

    Ohmite Little Demon

Longer leads seem handy, I didn't think of that. I had to google auto-insertion reels and just got my mind blown! I wonder how long it would take for the brand new carbon comp resistors to drift and make a tube amp unstable.

    Ohmite Little Demon

Thanks, I imagined that's why many people use them - for the ol 'visual verisimilitude' ha. It's a big reason of why I would like to use them - they look so cool on the board. But of course looks aren't everything, and nostalgia can get out of control. Amp fashion ha ha But still interested in...

There you go, I bet it's lovely up there. We have brown snakes, red belly black snakes, black snakes etc etc. Don't cause too much trouble, our resident snakes would know our habits well and stay far away.

Thanks screefer that is good to know. Very neat build. I'd be interested to know what they use.

    Ohmite Little Demon

That seems to be the way to go 2L man. I have read great info in the thread https://www.tdpri.com/threads/where-to-use-cc-resistors-on-5e3-amp.843225/ and articles: http://www.geofex.com/article_folders/carbon_comp/carboncomp.htm and...

    Ohmite Little Demon

Does anyone use these modern 'Ohmite Little Demon' carbon composite resistors extensively throughout in new Fender clone builds? Product page: https://www.ohmite.com/od-of-oa-series/ Datasheet: https://www.ohmite.com/assets/docs/res_od_of_oa.pdf Interested to hear how they have worked for you...

    Just bought a Twin Reverb...

Fantastic, they get a great sound even at low volumes. I still take my '73 out to gig every now and again - it's on wheels. I usually gig with my AC15 but that's not the lightest amp either.

My chassis and small parts arrived a few days ago - very exciting! I am still investigating, reading, planning, ordering - but the wheels in are in motion.

    Good day from Calgary

Welcome Television91, you have a lovely collection there. I'm also a long time lurker who just got active. I will attempt to make the old school TDPRI members proud and ask - got any pics?

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Thanks for the heads up, I have a vox ac15 with a greenback I can test it with when the time comes. The volume/power switch has sure got me reading, thanks! So many amps, so little time ha ha. While I am waiting for my parts I am checking other people's threads, and studying sites like Rob's...

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

So at this point I have a chassis, eyelet board, caps, knobs, jacks, wire, sockets, lamp, fuse etc. in the mail. I need to clear out a space to build it. I am in the process of setting up my shop so this project should give me a kick to get it done.

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

Thanks pfarrell, I have checked this out at Rob's page before. So many useful mods. I am going to make a nice stock version first with tweed covering. Then later on down the track, I would like the build another with all the mods, probably uncovered. A rat rod :). As for home, practice and...

Sorry yes you did say that - which makes sound like a good choice. Thanks for those pictures, it all makes 'clear' sense now! The polish really tidies those ends up on the cloth.

    5E3 Build (first tube amp)

I know right?! I appreciate all the wisdom and experience here so much. Good idea - I just started a note on my computer and put the choices and considerations I face. I'd love to go cloth for looks and to be 'PC' (period correct 😁) - I will just need some practise working with it. I can see...

    Hi all

Thanks all for the warm welcomes. I love my telecaster. My dad chose and bought this for me, it is my most serious guitar - one I can truly depend on. Bowing down to Leo! Really, that's great to hear. I saw the doco ' I'm not dead yet' a few years back, it was a good watch. He is certainly a...
