    Recording Acoustic Guitar

Whenever I use X-Y for acoustics, it is never the intent to spread them as stereo, but an easier way to capture body and neck to buss down to a single track in a full band mix. If I do use it for something more minimal, I might spread it a little as a stereo track but not so much that it doesn't...

    I think I shall build a mic!

Interesting! Not saying I liked it best, just guessing based on maybe the componentry. I personally preferred "This One"! Nothing a bit of the "Air Band" won't get you back to it... Nice going!

    I think I shall build a mic!

"That one" sounds a bit brighter, so I'm gonna guess that's the build??? Regardless whatever the differences are would be pretty miniscule to match with a tad of EQ going in or post. Great job!

    Studio Tour you gotta watch!

A friend of mine here (Eric Scott Williams) in LA helped design/build out Ray's studio. So far that's his crown jewel build. Eric is also a great bassist... used to tech for John Entwistle if memory serves.

Early Mixing is not a group activity

99% of the time I mix alone. I will send a mix out to the whole band but make one person the point person and funnel all the agreed revisions through them. This way they can argue amongst themselves what is best for the song as opposed to ego driven changes. If this mix is 99.9% done, I might...

    I think I shall build a mic!

He's actually looking for musicians to do a string of dates. Being Native American he has a line of casinos that will probably offer some great gig benefits. He's a really nice guy and has a great work ethic. He comes out to LA every couple of months to track vocals to new material with me.

    I think I shall build a mic!

FWIW, Here's a track I did the vocals on using the WA-67... Tracked via UA Apollo using 1073 Unison into 1176E 4:1 only to catch offending peaks.

    I think I shall build a mic!

Yes from my understanding, UA bought Bock and hired David on with it. Yes they hold their value. New ones were $6500-ish still. Yes that was the best trade I ever made! Surprisingly the Blue Bottle w/B0 capsule (251 informed) is different enough from the Bock 251 that there's no overlap. I'll...

    I think I shall build a mic!

I've got an amp builder friend in Austin that has a huge supply of vintage and NOS. I'll have to see what he's got and what's affordable. My biggest issue I had with the previous WA67 they sent me was with pro singers that project loudly and everything is recorded properly it was either...

    I think I shall build a mic!

@matman14 @Telekarster Warm just sent me out a WA67 to try out. I'll probably end up keeping since the 67 fills a hole for me. I have a Bock 251 already and it is pretty spectacular! I'm sure David will make sure the quality is on par and if you're lucky they'll find a good way to lower the...

    I think I shall build a mic!

@matman14 Safe travels, I know someone that came back last week from EU and brought a case of Covid back... Yea I have never been a fan of the u87. Just never did it or me... I've been told to get into the VO arena plenty, but most VO folks seem to find what works for them and learn to do it...

    I think I shall build a mic!

@matman14 I guess you could rent a U87 worst case scenario and build that into the rate. Been a bit since I was in any studio on Lankershim. I had my private production place up by Paramount/Amerycan next door to Dave Pearlman mics about 15 yrs ago. Pretty sketchy area now! What area are you...

    I think I shall build a mic!

@matman14 Sometimes I find a little gentle education to the client by explaining it's the whole chain. I bet 99% they couldn't tell you what processing was after the mic before printing the audio. I've played examples or even recorded of them that changed their mindset. Basically, ya gotta...

    New vocal secret weapon.

Be curious how dark it is compared to the Coles, which tend to be darker. Probably why they are great too as drum overheads. I typically will use my Fathead II w/ Lundahl transformer for gtr, which is my first choice usually. Not sure how close in proximity we are here in LA, but I'd be up to do...
