  • I wanted to ask about that Telecaster in your avatar. It doesn't look like a Telecaster to me. Did you modify it?

What year was it made, what is the serial number on your Telecaster, and how long have you owned it?

    I love Telecasters!

The guitar plays great—awesome feel, extremely balanced weight and spectacular tuning stability…but it was very vanilla-looking for my kinda “gaudy” preferences.

So I replaced the black pickguard with a tortoiseshell one and then got it pinstriped by a local guy who builds and designs skateboards.

I do one other weird thing—I play it with the “ashtray” in place. Between my fingerpicking technique and my occasional severe flare ups of eczema, I don’t palm mute very much, and having a place to rest my hand is a relief.

So yes, it’s a real Telecaster (unless you’re anti-MIM) and yes I modified it. You’re not likely to find another like it…

Wonderful pinstripe job on your guitar!
It's quite hard to get pin striping right on Telecasters, but this one is perfect! Not too much, but just enough to really add character to the essential qualities of the Tele body.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate your compliment.

I searched extensively until I found a balanced design—not “too much”—and finally found this design, based on something Billy Gibbons had done on one of his Telecasters...

I don’t have the ability to do any kind of pinstriping, so I found a guy who did a beautiful job...it’s my favorite guitar—I customized it quite a bit—but it was a bit vanilla-looking before the stripes...now it looks as cool as it sounds!
