    What's on your workbench today?

Awesome, thanks for the clear and thorough explanation. Now I just need a drill press large enough to reach the ferrule holes…

    What's on your workbench today?

A fence works for me. Mine aren’t perfect, but that is more likely due to some slop in the cheap drill press I have. I’ve also tried making a template with perfectly aligned holes and use that, though if I can’t drill perfectly aligned holes in the template…

    Travel guitar scale

No, between getting a new job, and a new puppy, my spare time for playing or building is extremely limited. Lots of guitars sitting around the house unplayed…

    BobJ’s 2022 Brotherhood Build (Esquire?)

Been a few weeks, took it to the local community jam and played the heck out of it for a couple hours. First impression, super fun! Second impression, needs string trees (kept popping the e string out of the nut). Third impression, it’s a pain to keep turning around to adjust the volume on the...

    my first build thread

I find finishing is the hardest part too. Especially paint (vs clear) finishes. Just takes practice. Painted my first, sonic blue rattle can lacquer from Stewart Macdonald, a disaster. Clear finishes on the next 3, went better, painted my most recent, almond rattle can lacquer (Mohawk), and it’s...

    First Build Advice?

Since you asked for advice… Read more build threads, spend less time on YouTube. You can start with a kit (I did) and “customize” it, it’s really convenient to have all the parts at the start, but it’s not hard to build a body. Starting with 2x4s is not a bad way to learn, all my scratch...

    BobJ’s 2022 Brotherhood Build (Esquire?)

Well, the neck isn’t finished yet, but I couldn’t wait. I installed the semi-functional neck I replaced from my double cut, and strung it up. This is going to be a fun one to play! No controls yet, pickup is wired straight into the jack. Light and simple, weighs in at 5-1/4 lbs. The lack of...

    Off topic, wooden kayak

Thanks Freeman (and everyone else) for your enthusiastic and helpful replies. I’ve spent the past few days down the kayak-building rabbit hole, looks like the various options range from slightly less complicated than building a guitar, to really challenging (like the guitars Freeman builds). I...

    Off topic, wooden kayak

Yes, but my wife has already commented that building a kayak is something she could get behind, and if I build one for myself I’ll need to build a second one for her…. She still doesn’t understand why I’m building another guitar. The third kayak might be a hard sell (but what about when someone...

Build No. 3 - The Holy Moly Barncaster Build

Looks great, good job hanging in there and getting it done! How does it sound?

    Off topic, wooden kayak

Has anyone here ever built a wooden kayak, and know of a TDPRI-like community where I can learn more?

    BobJ’s 2022 Brotherhood Build (Esquire?)

The never-ending build… Made the neck just a little thinner, 0.940” at the first fret, gradually increasing to 1” at the 12th. Drew some lines for secondary facets And went at it with the BOBASS (Bauer Oscillating Belt And Spindle Sander). I like the personalized and fitting acronym. I’ve used a...

Ordered the StewMac built body all hardwood D kit: 'May forturne favour the foolish' (J.T. Kirk

Thanks Freeman, I think the $200 sale price is what is pushing me that direction. It’s kinda hard for me to justify spending $600+ on a kit for my hobby right now. Think I’ll wait until I can find a “real” kit at a substantial discount, or when financial circumstances change.

Ordered the StewMac built body all hardwood D kit: 'May forturne favour the foolish' (J.T. Kirk

I’m looking for an update too! I see the “cheaper” body-built kit on sale at SM right now, and am wondering if anyone here has experience with these. I’ve built a few electrics, but would like to try an acoustic guitar, is this kit too far built to be interesting, and will it result in a guitar...
