I sort of shake my head and pinch the bridge of my nose at some Dio lyrics: “Ride the ti-GAH!!!” But not without appreciation and respect...that guy could SANG and those are some slammin, well-produced rock mixes with great tight playing.

The bass sound from Dio hits are pretty much my tonal goal when I play bass. I guess when I’m wearing my bass I am transformed into a magical bringer of the fi-YAH. Also blood, steel, stone, leather and all that.

I should also mention that when I’m flippin stations and hear Rainbow in the Dark, Holy Di-VAH, Man on the Silver Mountain or Last in Line, I turn it up. The rock pow-AH of those songs is a lot of what I remember fondly about 1980s rock radio.

I think an argument could be made that those songs hit as hard as anything; for me more recent downtuned stuff sounds messier but doesn’t sound “more badass.” A lot of Metallica stuff contains interesting parts but I don’t think the songs as a whole, or the mixes, are necessarily “meaner.” I hear it as “messier.”

But all that is subjective and just my ears and opinion. Anyway, yeah, that stuff flippin rocks.

Dio gets some extra points for having a little self-parody fun in Tenacious D’s movie “The Pick of Destiny,” I think.

I should also mention that there are many ways in which I am unhip, so take my Dio opinions with a grain of salt...

Nothing beats Dio when I'm in the mood for metal. Lock up the wolves is one of my favorite, unless we are talking music videos. How could you not love the epic metal-ness of Dio just walking around with a medieval sword in Holy Diver?

Dio is my favourite singer of all time. His lyrics made perfect sense to me when I was a teenager, and to be honest I still don't question them now even though I'm 55. Count me in as one of the unhip.
His run of albums with Rainbow, Sabbath and Dio, from Rising to The Last In Line is superb.

As well as being one of the nicest guys in the business...
