SOLD ON REVERB!
This meticulously built, hand wired 5 Watt amp is modeled after the venerable Fender Tweed Champ 5F1 from the late 50’s with a few upgrades that make it more suitable for modern live performance and recording.
This one is housed in an exquisite lacquered Tweed “Big Boy” cabinet from Mergili Innovations. The light weight, heavy duty resonant Pine cabinet is built Oversized (15.5 x 16.5 x 8.75) to fit a 10” Speaker for a fuller, deeper sound. This 10” Weber Vintage Alnico Series Speaker (10A100) is known for its early warm and crunchy breakup that gets more aggressive, and compressed/fattened at high volume.
The first thing you might notice is the layout of the Top Panel is slightly different than the traditional Champ. The Fuse block has been moved to the bottom of the chassis so that a Modern on/off switch can take its place and the Volume Control with added “Bright Cap” can take Center Stage. The original all-in-one on/off/volume control is a known source of noise in Old School Champs and this new configuration eliminates that problem.
Next, notice there is an extra Fender Radio Knob! That knob is what I like to call the “More” knob. The “More” knob is wired to the NFB (Negative Feedback) circuit. All the way counter clockwise, the circuit is exactly the way Leo originally designed it. Turn the knob clockwise, open up the throttle and begin to experience the amp giving you “more”. More Volume. More gain. More Bandwidth. More Tweediness!
Diving into the Chassis reveals more modernization. Built with TONE in mind, only the finest quality components available are utilized. Careful attention to details reveals the finest Switchcraft jacks, CTS pots, Carling Switches, German F&T, Sprague and Blue Sozo Capacitors. Best quality Belton Tube Sockets include Diode Protection for Rectifier Tube with Screen and Grid Stop Resistors on Power Tube for tube protection and to prevent odd sounding 'double frequency' blocking distortion. Mini Switch next to Speaker Output Jack to switch from 4 ohm to 8 ohm for use with optional outboard Speaker Cabinets.
Last but not least, this little screamer ships with 3 tubes carefully chosen for this particular amp. First, the JJ 5Y3 Rectifier chosen for Rock Solid performance in a current Production tube. Next, the Tung Sol 6V6GT Power Tube, a rich and fat sounding tube with great reliability and longitivtiy. Finally, the Russian made reissue of the original Tung-Sol 12AX7 Pre Amp Tube. The Ultimate 12AX7! Big, warm, and musical. High Gain, ultra-low microphonics, and superb linearity with a dynamic 3-D sound.
If you have always wanted a nice Tweed Champ with a few modernizations, this might be the amp for you!
