I had one years ago. It didn't do anything for me. If you're looking for a low gain OD, I've been through tons of them and settled on the CMATMODS Butah. If you like your amp tone, this is the one. Totally transparent.

Try building a Keeley katana. I have built both and the SHO did nothing for me but the katana is a excellent sounding boost.

I'm a SHO fan, the one I built though gets quite noisy above about half way. Not sure if its my fault or by design.

I like to just set it just above unity and leave it on to give a nice subtle sparkle.

I love the SHO, I use it as an always on pedal and only around a third of the way up or less. It's not really an effect pedal, more a tone enhancer. Sometimes I also add another for a volume boost for a clean solo. I built a couple with two SHOs in one pedal, adding tone and volume pots to the second one.

I have the Super Duper, which is two SHOs in one and I think it's great. I can never take it off any pedals combination I use.

Super Duper 2-in-1 user here as well. Another one of my few absolute keeper pedals.

It's best used like a KLON Centaur - with a tube amp that's right on the edge of distortion. I set the first SHO to give a very slight push over the edge, and the second to toss it over the cliff...*barely* affects the tone of the amp itself - if anything it adds a very slight amount of presence (not treble - a "clarity" and focus to the sound).

Finally picked up a super duper.. Don't see what all the fuss is about.. Grabbed a Donner Clone EP boost for $30.. Best deal out there..
