Everyone has a favorite song. But do you have a favorite line from a song?

Mine has always been the one line in Bowie's 'Scary Monsters:'

Well I love that little girl and I'll love her 'til the day she dies.

Such a nasty little turn of phrase.

    What's yours?

Might be an odd choice but from True by Spandau Ballet:

Why do I find it hard to write the next line?

I always imagine Gary Kemp sitting there scratching his head going ‘oh why do I find it hard to write the next line’ and having a lightbulb appearing above his head.

Not my favorite song, but that line was so powerful and illustrative I remember saying "wow" when I heard it.

Ha! I, too, immediately thought of an Elvis Costello line...

"You may not be an old fashioned girl but you're gonna get dated".

Every once in a while a line in the lyrics brings a smile..
    This one I love..
"As long as old men sit and talk about the weather, and as long as old women sit and talk about old men"..

This line has presented itself throughout my life since the first time I heard it.

Another line that makes me smile is from Status Quo... and I smile because of the grammatically correct usage from a rock band...

"To whom do you belong, little blue-eyed lady?"

Little Blue-Eyed Lady, from the "Hello" album.

John K. Sampson and/or The Weakerthans probably deserve a lifetime achievement award for this category.

The Grateful Dead did have some really good lyrics, courtesy of their librettist Robert Hunter. So many
excellent lyrics. For example, from Sugar Magnolia--

"She can dance a Cajun rhythm, just like a Willys in four wheel drive,
She's a summer lover in spring fall and winter,
She can make happy, any man alive."

I recently watched the Eagles documentary on YouTube. I learned that "Take it Easy" was actually a song
by Jackson Browne, but he hadn't finished all the lyrics. Jackson says that this line is truly perfect and
he was quite impressed that the Eagles crafted it. It has a girl, God, possible romance, and a truck all there in one pithy line.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily my favorite lyric but it is quite impressive when you think about it--

Something strange and magical bubbled up out of Peter Gabriel’s subconscious when he was writing the lyrics to The Lamia from The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. After Rael has consumed the corpses of his snake-bodied lovers, he notices that “It is the scent of garlic that lingers on my chocolate fingers.” Strangely poetic...

The same song has a line so good that the band then appropriated it as the title of an ambient instrumental track: “Each empty snake-like body floats: silent sorrow in empty boats.”
