I was thinking about this the other day when my wife mentioned in passing that she'd applied for a position on another continent. If I needed to pare my collection down to the bare minimum, I'd want to keep (in order)-

    1. LP Special with P90s & Bigsby
    2. Troy Van Leeuwen Jazzmaster
    3. G&L Legacy USA

If I had room for a fourth, it's be my USA ASAT.

And naturally, basses don't count- that's a separate list:

    1. '82 Fender "Fullerton" '62 RI P-bass
    2. MIJ Jaguar bass (purely because the P-bass doesn't go out to gigs anymore, otherwise I wouldn't "need" more than one)

I'm not a huge Strat guy... so instead I have two teles: 50s style and 60s style, a '58 RI Les Paul, and a 1965 SG. That rounds things out nicely. Similarly, my Deluxe style amps are a 50s style and a 60s style. I'm seeing a theme here.

    Jazzmaster and Jaguar

Ive had several Teles, Strats and Les Pauls, sold them all over the years. Currently have a Jazzmaster, its better than all 3 IMO. With the hot, soapbar pickups and rhythm/lead circuits, more variety of tones. I can get the twang of a Tele, the bluesy sound of a Strat and the crunch of a Les Paul all in a single guitar. My Jaguar is a close second. Another great guitar with a ton of available tones.

I currently have two teles and four acoustics.
I could probably do without one tele and a couple of the acoustics, but they have sentimental value and I'm a sentimental guy.
    I'm pretty satisfied.
That said, when I find the right Les Paul junior it's coming home.

something with single coils - tele
something with p90s - tele custom
something with humbuckers - les paul

if there was to be a fourth, it would be a hollow body of some kind.

consider also if you want to keep them eventually from customs (cites) you'll spend 75 dollars on the permit for each of them with rosewood!

One acoustic, one electric. To me, a strat is the best combination of sounds from any electric for how I play. I don't need no stinkin' humbuckers and I really don't need a tele's awesome bridge pickup either because I'm not that much of a bridge-only type player anyway (and most of the other tele settings I can approximate on a strat). But I love teles, so I may just add one someday anyway whether I can rationalize it or not. Maybe just set it up in open G with a five string setup, or really high action for messing around with slide or maybe just to have one with a fat neck and 7.25 radius for a change of pace. But, honestly, once I pick up my strat and start playing, I never EVER want for anything else, so if I ever add a tele, it'll just be pure GAS and nothing else. When I was into photography and cycling, I had solid uses and reasons for having multiple bikes and cameras, but with guitars, I've never come up with any solid rationale for multiple electric guitars...

Got the Tele. Got the Strat. Got the LP. The one I was missing was the Casino! That special bark, bite and honk of those P90s on a hollow body is the sound I've been missing!
