Tele with single coils like a Baja or Lite Ash and another with punchier pickups like a Cab. That's about it unless maybe an acoustic for songwriting.

Guitars that play well / stay in tune,
gear that doesn't hum, buzz, crackle, and pop.

3 Teles, 2 Strats, Jaguar, Jazz Bass, Les Paul, ES335, SG, Gretsch G5420T, 3 acoustics, Regal Square Neck Resonator. Love my Teles best. Not sure what to get next.

Everything is covered with a 335 and a Tele.

In a pinch and with the right bridge pickup - just a 335.

These are universal rules not just mine...

Well, if you already have a Tele, a Strat, and a Les Paul, you need one more thing ...

    AN AMP!! :p

I have 5 guitars and I consider them my essentials:

In my ideal world: Strat, Tele, LP, ES-335, Gretsch (DuoJet or 6120), Rik 12, Martin 000-18, Gibson J45 or SJ, Martin D28, Guild 12, quality Nylon string.

I have the Strat, Tele, LP, 000-18, Gibson, Rik 12, nylon string but I will never own the Gretsch, Guild 12, or ES335. In fact, the Les Paul and a few others will be sent packing one day. When I was younger I coveted every guitar. It was like a quest. Now, I don't care as much. I still admire beautiful guitars but it's no longer a strong need or want to possess them. Maybe I've finally grown up at the age of 67.
I do have some emotional attachment to some of my collection so that's why it's been hard to decide which ones part with but eventually I will be down to a Tele, a Strat, the 000-18 and the Gibson SJ. (I might keep the Rik and the nylon string too).

IMHO it's absolutely essential for a guitarist to own a guitar. If you keep having to borrow somebody else's, people will think you're annoying. Owning a second one can be useful too in case you break a string or something.

i've got a tele, 3 strats, LP, ES 335 and 2 p-bass's. all that's left that i'd like to have is a 56 reissue LP and a LP Special. oh, and a 61 reissue LP/SG. but actually, i could just stop where i'm at and accumulate more amps.

Gotta have an ES-335 with a Hipshot Trilogy, a Tele with a Hipshot Trilogy, a nice acoustic, a Twelve-O-Caster, and a baritone with a Hipshot Trilogy.

To someone not familiar with guitars, this might seem like foolish indulgence, but a player who really plays needs a variety of instruments to properly express the perfect nuances called for in various situations.

I have been working on getting the little fleet compressed to the minimum pickup variations, not just chassis types, having flexibility to cover other tones with each instrument.

    Tele with a 4-way
Strat with the Dan Armstrong Blender mod (SSS into HSH on the fly)
Les Paul type with split neck coil to get Strat single coil and parallel quack tones
SG HH, may add a coil split option
LP type single-cut with a pair of P90s
P-Bass type with added J's for a JPJ where the neck J is near the neck using a Strat 5-way switch
    Acoustic beater

Tele with a 4 way seems to fit all my needs. I have other guitars, but they don't really get much action.

Tele, Strat, ES-335, something with P-90s (hollow or solid? Can't decide so I have both), smaller mahogany acoustic, rosewood dreadnought...

To be honest, the only guitars I "need" are my Tele and my 000-15M.

I really only need two guitars to do everything I want - a decent electric and a decent acoustic. I would prefer the electric to be an old school Strat or Tele both of which I have covered. The best acoustic I have is a Blueridge BR183 and I find it very satisfactory.

This is pretty much the way I see it too although my choice for preferred electrics would be an old school Tele or a Junior with a dog ear P-90. Fortunately for me, my current inventory has all these bases covered with 1 spare in both the acoustic and the Tele category.
